Lot 338. Autographs of 2 Top College Basketball Coaches – John Wooden and Pat Summitt. Each signed a biographical hardback book. Each is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The UCLA coach’s signature is in “They Call Me Coach,” by Wooden as told to Jack Tobin, 1972,gem mint 10 autograph, nm book, vg+ to ex dust jacket. In the 27 years Wooden was UCLA's head coach, his teams won 10 national championships, including seven in a row in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was in the inaugural class of the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. In 38 seasons as the head coach at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Pat Summitt led her teams to a 1,098-208 record, 31 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and eight national championships. She was named the Naismith Coach of the Century in 2000. Her gem mint 10 autograph is on the flyleaf of “The Summitt Season,” written by Nancy E. Lay, 1989 first edition, nm to nm-m book, ex+ dust jacket. Lay also signed the flyleaf. Wooden and Summitt are widely regarded as the best all-time college coaches of, respectively, male and female basketball. Wooden passed away in 2010, and Summitt, in 2016. PSA/DNA Pre-Certified.

The 1990 book “Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association” has large, bold gem mint 10 autographs on the title page by George Gervin who added “Ice,” Connie Hawkins and John B. McLendon, Jr. McLendon was the first African American to coach basketball at a predominantly white university, the first African American head coach in any professional sport and a major contributor to the development of modern basketball. The 1990 book by Terry Pluto is ex-m with a slight stub in the lower right corner of the cover; the dust jacket is ex. “The Smart Take from the Strong: The Basketball Philosophy of Pete Carril” was written by Carril with Dan White. The book is a 1997 first edition, nm-m in a nm dust jacket. Carril's signature is mint 9. He was the head coach at Princeton for 30 years. The third book, “Elevating the Game” by Nelson George, is a 1992 stated first edition, ex-m book and dust jacket. Subtitled “Black Men and Basketball,” the book has title page nm-m 8 to mint 9 or better autographs by McLendon, William “Pop” Gates, (Clarence) Big House Gaines and the author. Lot 341. 1940s George Mikan Flyer Promoting “College Basketball Nites” in Chicago, & a Basketball Ticket. Then a star for DePaul, Mikan is the central figure in this tri-color 8.5” x 11” flyer, printed on both sides and offering a “Thrill a Minute! On College Basketball Nite at the Chicago Stadium.” Nine such “nites” were scheduled on three Fridays and six Saturdays from Dec. 8, 1944 through Feb. 24, 1945. In addition to DePaul, Northwestern and Notre Dame were frequent participants in these contests. The flyer, folded twice as designed for mailing, is ex+. For the 1944-45 season, Mikan was a consensus All-American, and “The Sporting News” and Helms Player of the Year. Mikan was the first NBA player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also in the College Basketball Hall of Fame. The ticket is a complimentary variety for the Feb. 1, 1935 Southern California game against UCLA. The front has two pin holes and otherwise a vg appearance. The blank back has writing on it and two scuffs.

Lot 343. 14 Isiah Thomas 8” x 10” Glossy Printed Photos from 1990 NBA Hoops. These photos are nm-m to mint as packaged for sale. A 12-time All-Star guard for the Detroit Pistons, Thomas was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000 and to the College HoF in 2006. In 1996, he was selected as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

Lot 344. Impressive Basketball Collection of 13 Figures, Jordan Litho Basketballs and More! All of the figures are mint in their original packaging. Shaquille O’Neal is the subject of two figures, one from McFarlane’s SportsPicks Series 2 (2001), and the other, from Starting Lineup’s 1997 Backboard Kings issue. McFarlane’s Series 5 is the source of a LeBron James collectible. These three figurines are about 9” tall. The McFarlane packages are nm to nm-m. The Starting Lineup box with Shaq has a price sticker and an indentation on the plastic. In 1998, Mattel issued a 5” figure of Kobe Bryant. Nm+ package with a price sticker. Six figures are in “Classic Doubles” from Starting Lineup’s 1997 edition – O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, and Joe Dumars and Grant Hill. These packages are nm except for one or two small corner creases; two packages each have a price sticker. Two 3” figures are from Headliners, 1996: Penny Hardaway and Damon Stoudamire. Michael Jordan is featured on two Mini Litho Basketballs from Spectacular Arts. Ex-m to nm packages. The basketballs, 5.5” in diameter, are mint; they each present two images of Jordan and career highlights. The boxes housing the basketballs show heavy use. Jordan has a role in another figure – a stuffed Warner Bros. “Taz” from the 1996 movie “Space Jam.” Part of a McDonald’s promotion, the 7.5” figure is mint in an unopened package. With these 13 figures and two basketballs are four empty cans that offered Michael Jordan memorabilia as part of an Upper Deck promotion.
