The third baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates entered the Hall of Fame in 1948 with a .320 career batting average and significant respect for his defensive capabilities. In 1998, “The Sporting News” had him at No. 70 on its list of “Baseball’s 100 Greatest Players.” In 1929, John McGraw said of Traynor: “If I were to pick the greatest team player in baseball today – and I have some of the greats on my own club – I would have to pick Pie Traynor.” Traynor died in 1972.
