Lot 72. “Man on Spikes” Baseball Novel Autographed by the Author – Eliot Asinof. Before serving in World War II and then becoming a writer, Asinof briefly played minor league baseball in the Phillies organization, for the Moultrie Packers and the Wausau Timberjacks. Mike Kutner, the main character is this 1955 book, an apparent first edition, is based upon Mickey Rutner, an Asinof teammate who eventually played in 12 games in the Majors. Like Kutner, Rutner faces numerous hurdles in becoming a major leaguer. Asinof tells Rutner’s story from the perspective of 13 people who are close to him. Roger Kahn, another noted author, chose “Man on Spikes” as one of “the golden dozen” baseball books. Asinof’s autograph on the title page is gem mint 10. At some point, the book’s front cover and dust jacket encountered water, and the two are now partially attached. The book’s binding remains tight, and the pages are unaffected. PSA/DNA Pre-Certified.
