Lot 248. Original 1929 Sepia Wire Photo of Bill Tilden and H.V. S. Dillon at Wimbledon. Tilden captured the Wimbledon championship in 1920, 1921 and again in 1930. In 1929, he defeated Dillon, from Ireland, in the first round, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, but lost to France’s Henn Cochet, the ultimate champion, in the semi-final. The 6” x 8” Culver Pictures photo shows Tilden and Dillon at center court before their event. The vg-ex photo has a tiny chip in the lower right corner, a very small edge tear and a couple of creases. The contrast and focus are sharp. The caption on the back is dated June 24, 1929. Tilden is generally regarded as one of the top 10 tennis players of all time. He dominated the game from 1920-34 and is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Winning Bid $20.
