Cards Signed by Dandridge, Leonard and Irvin Plus 19 Unsigned Cards.

Lot 164. Cards Signed by Dandridge, Leonard and Irvin Plus 19 Unsigned Cards. The signatures of Ray Dandridge and Buck Leonard, both Hall of Fame stars of the Negro Leagues, are gem mint 10 on nm-m 1990 Great Moments cards. Monte Irvin, another Negro League player elected to the Hall of Fame, signed a 1992 Front Row card. His signature is nm-m 8. Dandridge was a stellar third baseman who consistently hit for an excellent average. When he was finally allowed to play integrated baseball at age 36, he was the 1949 Rookie of the Year and the 1950 MVP in the American Association. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987 and passed away in 1994. Playing for the Homestead Grays for his entire 15-season Negro Leagues career, Leonard excelled as a hitter and first baseman. In 1999, the “Sporting News” ranked him 47th on its list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players. In 1972, Leonard and teammate Josh Gibson became the second and third Negro Leagues players inducted into the Hall of Fame. He died in 1997. Irvin was 30 when he was admitted to the Majors. He batted .293 over his MLB career, led the N.L. in RBI in 1951, was an All-Star in 1952 and served as an important mentor and friend to young Willie Mays, who said it “was just a treat to be around” Irvin. Almost all of the unsigned cards are from Perez-Steele: Great Moments – Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson and Willie Wells. 1989 Celebration – Cool Papa Bell, Judy Johnson and Buck Leonard. 1980-81 postcards – Martin Dihigo, Oscar Charleston, Rube Foster, Josh Gibson, Judy Johnson, John Lloyd, Joe Rogan, Willie Wells and Joe Williams. In addition, there are four Front Row cards with photos of Irvin. A total of 22 cards, all featuring Negro Leagues stars. Winning Bid $50.
