Scarce Autograph of Billy Southworth, Hall of Fame Manager.

Lot 158. Scarce Autograph of Billy Southworth, Hall of Fame Manager. Nm-m 8 signature on a 2.75” x 3.5” magazine photo that shows Southworth being hugged by John Quinn, general manager of the Boston Braves, after Southworth guided the team to the N.L. pennant in 1948. Southworth died in 1969, almost 39 years before his Hall of Fame induction. Enshrined at Cooperstown in 2008 as a manger, he also led the St. Louis Cardinals to World Championships in 1942 and 1944 and to an N.L. title in 1943. Southworth's major league teams won 1,044 games and lost 704, for a .597 career winning percentage - second only to Joe McCarthy's .615. He was the first major leaguer to win the World Series as a player and later as a manager. An outfielder, he batted .297 with the Indians, Pirates, Braves, Giants and Cardinals. Winning Bid $95.
