The size of an index card, the paper itself has a scuff to the right of the bottom of the “g” in Hornsby’s autograph. Hornsby was one of baseball’s best. Ninth best in the 20th century, according to “The Sporting News.” In a span of six seasons, “Rajah” batted above .400 three times. He was the N.L.’s MVP twice. He won seven batting titles and led the N.L. in slugging percentage nine times; that record still stands. Only Ty Cobb, at .366, has a higher career batting average than Hornsby’s .358.
