Lot 20. Scarce Circa 1973 Roberto Clemente Figural Chalkware Bank by Ivo Zini. Widely regarded as one of baseball’s best 25 players, Clemente is presented in a Pittsburgh Pirates jersey and cap in this bust, which is 12” tall and across. This is the full-color version of the bank, which is considerably less common than the bronze version liberally produced in the 1980s. The bank displays well and is in comparatively strong condition for this issue. The bill of Clemente’s cap has been repaired at the front of the left side. A tiny chip and scratch are visible on his right cheek, and a half-dozen other tiny chips are visible elsewhere. The bottom right of the “2” in his uniform number has a very small chip. These conditions are not readily observable, and their effect on the sculpture’s appearance is minimal. How many of these banks were made is unclear. “Forty” seems to be the most common guesstimate. Whatever the number, they are the creation of Pittsburgh art nouveau art deco sculptor and artist Ivo Zini, whose name and “73” are on the back of Clemente’s left shoulder. Besides creating sculptures and other art, Zini put his talents to work for 25 year designing cosmetic prostheses for individuals affected by extensive surgery for head and neck tumors. He died in 2008. Zini’s sculpture honoring the Pittsburgh Pirates’ star outfielder will make an excellent addition to a Clemente collection and display.

Lot 39. Two 1930s Premiums, Each Showing a Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher. And the condition of each makes both very collectible. The first premium, a 1939 Goudey R303-A Sepia, measures 4" x 6-3/16"; the player is Mace Brown, an All-Star pitcher for Pittsburgh in 1938. The second is a 1936 R312 of Cy Blanton, an All-Star for Pittsburgh in 1937 and for the Phillies in 1941. Each premium is ex-m. The thin paper stock used for these premiums makes them difficult to find without creases.

Lot 61. 3 1958 Hires Root Beer Cards with Tabs – All Pittsburgh Pirates. With their tabs firmly attached, these cards have photos of #27 Frank Thomas ex-m, 45 Bill Virdon ex+ and 59 Roy Face nm. A pioneer among relief pitchers and closers, Face has never received the recognition awarded Hoyt Wilhelm for a similar career. He still holds the MLB single season records for winning percentage for a pitcher (.947, 18-1 record) and wins in relief (18) in 1959.

Lot 82. 1965 KDKA Poster of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Al McBean. These 8 1/8” x 12” sepia posters promote KDKA-TV and Radio and an Emenee Electric Guitar giveaway. Kids are encouraged to send to the KDKA Promotion Department their guess for the Pirates’ total of hits, home runs, runs and home attendance for the months of June, July and August of 1965. The best guesser would win an electric guitar. Few of these posters have survived. This one is ex – and a very cool item mixing music and baseball during the Clemente and Beatles era.

This set of 8” x 10” color photos with informational backs comprises: Alley ex+, Blass ex, Clemente nm, Giusti ex, Hebner ex, Mazeroski p, Moose ex, Oliver vg-ex, Robertson vg-ex, Sanguillen (pin hole; otherwise) ex, Stargell (two pin holes; otherwise) vg and Walker (pin hole; otherwise) ex+. These Pirates defeated Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Roberto Clemente was the Series MVP, and Steve Blass limited the Orioles to two runs and seven hits in two complete games. Lot 158. Scarce Autograph of Billy Southworth, Hall of Fame Manager. Nm-m 8 signature on a 2.75” x 3.5” magazine photo that shows Southworth being hugged by John Quinn, general manager of the Boston Braves, after Southworth guided the team to the N.L. pennant in 1948. Southworth died in 1969, almost 39 years before his Hall of Fame induction. Enshrined at Cooperstown in 2008 as a manger, he also led the St. Louis Cardinals to World Championships in 1942 and 1944 and to an N.L. title in 1943. Southworth's major league teams won 1,044 games and lost 704, for a .597 career winning percentage - second only to Joe McCarthy's .615. He was the first major leaguer to win the World Series as a player and later as a manager. An outfielder, he batted .297 with the Indians, Pirates, Braves, Giants and Cardinals.

Lot 203. 5 Signed Baseball “Greatest Thrill” Letters – from Blyleven, Kiner, Lopez, Rizzuto, Slaughter. These five Hall of Fame stars handwrote their letters in response to request letters from baseball promotor and author Bill Hongach, who was a batboy for the New York Yankees in 1972 and 1973. Letters by Ralph Kiner, Phil Rizzuto and Enos Slaughter appear to have been written circa 1973. While somewhat brief, all contain excellent content. Kiner, for example, discusses his 1950 All-Star game home run in some detail. Home runs or All-Star games have a role in the greatest thrills described by Bert Blyleven, Al Lopez and Slaughter. Rizzuto’s love of the game is evident in his letter. Each player signed his letter. The autographs are mint 9. Lopez’s mailing envelope is included; on the reverse, he wrote his last name and address. Blyleven is the only living member of this Hall of Fame group.
