Lot 13.  19th Century “Reward of Merit” with a Baseball Scene. Rewards of Merit were presented to students for good behavior and performance by their teachers in the 1800s. This scene has been variously dated from the 1850s through the 1870s. This example is approximately 3” x 6.5”, hand-colored, and double-matted and framed to 9” x 11. The student and teacher’s names are filled in and shows light, brief pencil writing above “Reward.” The certificate has a very minor stain below the “t” in “Merit” and appears to be free of creases.

Lot 14.  1878 H804-6 Forbes Co. Partial Set – 4 of 6 Cards. Generally, these cards are regarded as the first of the baseball trade card sets. This group includes Foul, Home Run, Muff and Twist. Fly and Judgment are missing. All have blank backs; two have a price sticker on the back, one has tape residue at the top and bottom, and one has moderate writing on the back. The fronts grade: Nm: 1 card. Ex-m: 1. Ex: 1. P: 1.

Lot 15.  1882 H804-11 Cosack & Co. Circled Position Trade Card – Catcher. Featuring Peck & Snyder advertising on the back, this card has been trimmed vertically by 7/8”, to 3 3/8” x 4 5/8”. The image of the player and his position are fully present; advertising at the bottom has been removed. As trimmed, the card grades vg-ex.

Lot 16.  1909 M101-2 “Sporting News” Supplement of Thomas W. (Tommy) Leach. Dated Dec. 23, the supplement has three partial punch holes along the right side. Otherwise, it grades good.

Lot 17.  1909-11 T206 Frank Chance Batting (Old Mill Back). The card has a stain confined primarily to the left and bottom borders. It is free of creases. Without the stain, it would be vg-ex, making vg-ex (st) an appropriate grade.

Lot 18.  1909-11 T206 Nap Lajoie Portrait. This card has a Piedmont 350 Subjects back. A crease on the front is not apparent on the back. G.

Lot 19.  1910 E91 Set C American Caramel Cards of Geo. Browne and Sam’l Leever. Browne played for Washington, and Leever, for Pittsburgh. Both of these scarce cards grade p.

Lot 20.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1913 Double-Fold Postcard – “Interior Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, Pa.” From Chautauqua Photographic, the color card shows a game in progress from center field. Postally used, it is taped along the fold and otherwise is good.

Lot 21.  1913-15 T5 Pinkerton Card of #260 Larry Doyle. This is the version with a blank back. Vg.

Lot 22.  2 1916 Famous-Barr Clothiers Cards - #134 O’Neill and 141 Rariden. The O’Neill card grades g+, and the Rariden, vg+. The checklist for these cards is the same as for the M101-5 set.
