Non-Sport Cards   22 Lots       »

Lot 259.  12 Individual Pages from the Circa 1888 A25 “World’s Inventors” Album. Pages 3 through 12 are present, including two copies of Page 12. All 50 inventors in the issue appear to be represented. Among them are Edison, Gutenberg, Fulton, Siemens, Morse, Watt, Colt, Franklin, Newton, Archimedes and Galileo. The pages feature bold colors, excellent portraits and superb background art. Eleven have descriptive backs with useful information on the inventors. Five pages are vg, and one has a chipped corner and a crease-free image area. Six have been trimmed to the right of the holes where string apparently held the album together; as trimmed, one is vg-ex, two are vg and three have chipped corners and image areas that are relatively problem-free. Matted and framed, they will display beautifully.
Winning Bid $168.

Lot 260.  2 Early 1890s N143 American Tobacco “Buffalo Bill Wild West Show” Die-Cuts. Two quality examples from this obscure set, including “Indian Gathering” and another that shows Buffalo Bill arriving apparently to save the Deadwood stage coach. The former appears to be pristine except for a ¼” crease. In the latter, the reins of one horse are separated, and striations, almost certainly from the printing process, are evident when the card is held at a certain angle toward light. Each die-cut is about 4 ½” x 6”.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 261.  Stollwerck’s Chocolates 1903-04 Set of 216 “Animal Kingdom” Cards, Album. Wonderful set of 1 7/8” x 3 5/8” animal cards with detailed color artwork on the front and descriptive backs. The cards are housed in a 10” x 14 ¾” hardcover album, “Collector-Album No. 6,” which has a vg cover picturing numerous animals and Noah’s Arc. The pages inside are ex. The cards are tipped into the pages, as in an early photo album, rather than glued in. They average vg+ to ex, look better, and would grade higher except for a number of small corner creases resulting from inserting the cards into the tight corners. Many cards grade higher, and few grade lower. In the album, the text on the back of the card is reproduced next to it. All text is in German. Delightful collectible!
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 262.  Set of 6 Large 1910s S66 Portraits of Indian Chiefs Silks. Numbered L-1 through L-6, these colorful silks measure about 4 3/8” x 6 ¾”. All show some fraying at the sides; only one image, which is centered to one side, is very slightly affected. These silks are exceptionally clean. Only one shows any stains (two that are very light), and one exhibits some inoffensive foxing in the background. Vg-ex overall with images that display much better.
Winning Bid $242.

Lot 263.  2 Circa 1910 Plow Boy Tobacco Premium Cards Featuring Native Americans. Obscure issue from Spaulding & Merrick, the source of the 1910 Plow Boy baseball cabinet cards. These 5 ½” x 8 ½” color cards apparently are from the same period, although they have characteristics of earlier cards as well. They are titled “Moving Day in the Indian Camp” g and “Princess Angeline,” purportedly the daughter of Chief Seattle, leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes in what is now Washington state, vg. Attractive, uncommon cards.
Winning Bid $94.

Lot 264.  Sewn 18” x 20 ½” Display Consisting of 72 College Leathers. Most of the 2” x 2 ½” leathers are from the circa 1910 L6 and L20 College Seals sets. State seals and college pennants also are represented. Among the colleges are Oklahoma, Penn State, Western Reserve, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Bucknell, Ohio State, Rutgers, Kentucky, Texas, Marquette and West Point. Ex overall, and an excellent display and conversation piece.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 265.  Circa 1910 L3 Large Leather “National Flags” Premium Featuring Austria. This hide-shaped premium, about 9 ¾” x 11”, uses the same artwork as the S30 silks. The flag is embossed, as is “Austria” inside a decorative banner and “177” inside a pentagon. The leather for this premium remains supple. At one time, the premium apparently was stitched to fabric, and there are regular stitch holes around the perimeter that do little to detract for the premium’s overall appearance. There is a crease through the flag. Attractive and scarce example for a type collection.
Winning Bid $110.

Lot 266.  Scarce Circa 1912-14 L5 Anargyros-Lorillard “Hamilton King Girls” Rowing Girl Leather. These die-cut premiums, about 8 ½” x 11 ¾”, feature a central embossed image produced from King’s artwork, which is used also for the T7-6 paper premiums. King’s signature and the title are embossed within decorative frames. This example has tack holes surrounded by scuffs at the bottom and in the two upper corners, a large scuff at the right, a small scuff at the top and a couple of light cracks. The leather is somewhat dry; the premium can be handled with care. The image of the Rowing Girl shows light wear while displaying very well. Scarce and desirable example for a type collection.
Winning Bid $121.

Lot 267.  109 1910-11 T107 Seals of the U.S. and Coats of Arms of All Countries of the World. All different, these 2 1/16” x 2 11/16” cards have color fronts with attractive artwork and Helmar Turkish Cigarettes backs. These cards constitute more than two-thirds of the set. Thirty-seven of the U.S. states are present. The cards grade: Ex: 27 cards. Vg-ex: 29. Vg: 27. G to g-vg: 16. F to f-g: 5. P to p-f: 5.
Winning Bid $100.

A pin advertising “Awful Fresh: McFarlane Candy is Gooder” on the back has on the front the flag China used until 1949, and now represents Taiwan, ex.
