Lot 579.  1941 Rosey Rowswell “Radio Scorecard” for Chicago at Pittsburgh. Beloved by Pirates fans, Rowswell broadcast Pirates games from 1936-54. He also wrote several books on baseball and the oft-recorded “Should You Go First Poem.” The scorecard is neatly scored in pencil for an April 25 game played by Billy Herman, Swish Nicholson, Dizzy Dean, Vince DiMaggio and others. Issued in conjunction with Mobil and two local radio stations, it was actually produced so that radio listeners could score the game at home. Vg-ex. MB $15.

Lot 580.  5 Pittsburgh Pirates Programs, 1949-53. The 1949 program is for a game late in the season with St. Louis. Additional players are penciled in on the scorecard, which is partially scored. Ralph Kiner is one of the players profiled in the 32 page program. G-vg with the cover detached. 1951 vs. St. Louis, additional players added to scorecard in pencil, Branch Rickey and Kiner profiled, ex with some extraneous writing. 1952, two different, both vs. Chicago, one neatly scored in pencil and vg-ex and the other partly scored and g+ to vg. Joe Garagiola is pictured in one. 1953 vs. Philadelphia, scored, ex. MB $20.

Lot 581.  3 Pennants, Each Representing a Different Period in Pittsburgh Pirates History. 1. This 11 ¾” x 28” pennant from the 1950s features the Pirates’ mascot above Forbes Field along with “Pittsburgh Pirates” in gold on the black felt background. Vg+ to ex. 2. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates World Champs. This 11 ½” x 29 ½” pennant features the Pirates mascot, players’ names on a scroll to the left and “World Champs Pittsburgh Pirates 1979” in black and gold text on the white felt field. Vg. 3. 1980s-90 with mascot. The mascot is pictured inside a baseball diamond. “Pittsburgh Pirates” appears in black and gold text on the white felt field of this 11 ¾” x 29 ¾” pennant. G.

Lot 582.  Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Issued Photos of Dino Restelli, Bill Mazeroski. Restelli played only two seasons of major league baseball, both with Pittsburgh, in 1949 and 1951. He started off his rookie season with a bang, hitting eight homeruns in his first 10 games. In the next 62 games, he hit only four homers. After the 1951 season, the San Francisco native returned home and joined the police force. His circa 1950 photo is 4” x 5” with creases in the bottom right corner and several tack holes in the border. G-vg with a strong sepia image. The Maz photo, probably from the early 1960s, is b&w, 8” x 10” and shows evidence of press use on the back. Vg+ to ex.

Lot 583.  1954 Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training Roster from Fort Pierce, FL. The roster lists Pirates favorites such as Elroy Face, Vernon Law and Bob Friend, but the presence of Curt Roberts and Sam Jethroe makes is especially interesting. Roberts became the Pirates’ first African-American player in 1954, and Jethroe appeared in two games. The fold-out creates four pages of spring training particulars with statistics. The statue of Honus Wagner on the cover makes this roster all the better. Nice, stiff ex+ copy.

Lot 584.  1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates’ Mascot Plaque, Ashtray, Candy Dish. Several wonderful mementoes from the most magical of Pittsburgh seasons. Most interesting and least common is the 7 ¼” x 10 ½” ceramic “Beat ‘Em Bucs” plaque with the Pirates’ mascot. Nice ex. The circular ashtray, 7 ¾” in diameter, has the mascot logo and “Pittsburgh Pirates 1960 world Champions” in the center. Ex-m+. Finally, this collection includes a 4 ¾” x 6 ¾” smoked glass candy dish. Baseball graphics and text detailing the Pirates’ World Series victory in gold are featured on the nm dish.

Lot 585.  1960s Pittsburgh Pirates Monument-Style Popcorn Holder. The Pirates mascot appears along with “Beat ‘Em Bucs” and “Pittsburgh Pirates” on this popcorn holder, which doubles as a megaphone. There is also an area for autographs. Technically g-vg with a strong image of the mascot and nice display potential.

Lot 586.  1960 New York at Pittsburgh World Series Program. The back cover is missing. The front cover is detached. A few of the inside pages have several small to mid-sized pencil markings on them; otherwise vg-ex interior. This scorecard is unscored.

Lot 587.  1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Tag-Ons Complete Set of 10 with Mazeroski and Clemente. Published in Pittsburgh, this sheet of stickers includes Stuart, Mazeroski, Hoak, Groat, Skinner, Virdon, Clemente, Burgess, Friend and Face. The full-color sheet of die-cut player photos is complete and unused. The photos have an adhesive back. Two original packaging folders, attractive in their own right, accompany the 10” x 15 ½” sheet, which is ex-m. Bob Friend is featured on the folders. The flap has been removed from one folder, and the flap is cut but still attached on the other. Otherwise, they are vg+ to ex and display very well.

Lot 588.  Set of 6 Original 1961 Ford Pittsburgh Pirates Prints by Riger, Original Envelope. An unauthorized reprint of the 11 7/8” x 14 ¾” b&w prints was made in 1998; these are the originals. The set consists of prints by famous sports artist Robert Riger of Clemente, Friend, Groat, Hoak, Mazeroski and Law. The print of Clemente has had white-out applied along the top edge; otherwise, it is ex-m. The other prints average ex-m to nm. The original envelope, which has Groat, apparently Hank Aaron (although he wears #14 instead of 44) and an umpire on the front cover, is g-vg, and scarce.

Lot 589.  Pittsburgh Pirates Record Album, World Series Memorabilia, Etc. The “Impossible Pirates” 33 1/3 rpm record album covers 60 years of Pirates baseball and focuses on the 1960 World Series. The front cover features a photo of Bill Mazeroski as he is about to cross home plate after hitting the home run that won the 1960. Vg jacket, ex-m album. Three items represent the 1979 World Series: A pair of unused tickets to Game 5; one is vg-ex, and the other, nm. And a 1979 World Series program, ex. Finally, a 1970 Three Rivers Stadium Souvenir Book commemorates the opening of the Pirates’ new home. It contains 104 pages of text and photo covering the construction of the stadium and Pirates history.

Lot 590.  Honus Wagner Co. Catchers Mitt. The tag on the glove reads “Honus Wagner Co. Athletic Goods Pittsburgh, PA.” This vintage SportRite “Professional Model” HW400 mitt shows use but not abuse. Ex.

Lot 591.  1969 Publication on the History of Forbes Field, Construction Photos. The 32-page magazine-format publication, which is printed in brown, is titled Forbes Field 60th Birthday 1909-1969: Pittsburgh Pirates Picture Album. It is loaded with historic photos of Pirates players and teams. Two 8” x 10” reproduction sepia photos show aspects of the historic ballpark’s construction, including one horse-drawn vehicle.

Lot 592.  Roberto Clemente Memorabilia Including Phil Musick’s Reflection’s on Roberto. Musick was an excellent Pittsburgh sportswriter, and his book on Clemente is an outstanding, insightful read. Softcover, 1994, nm. Clemente speaks for himself on a 33 1/3 rpm record album, “A Conversation with Roberto.” Vg jacket, nm album. Also: Two different first day envelopes with the 20-cent Clemente stamp; canceled on Aug. 17, 1984. An 8” x 10” collectible from Spectrum, #2218 of 5000, is titled “Roberto Clemente Collects 3,000th Hit in Final At-Bat,” nm-m. It has two images of Clemente at bat. There also is a 1970 Topps Poster #21, g.

Lot 593.  1994 Watch from Infinity Commemorating Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th Hit. Man’s watch with a gold-color raised image of Clemente on the face with the Hall of Fame right fielder’s name at the top and “3,000th Hit September 30, 1972” at the bottom. The watch has a leather band, works and is mint and unused. It comes in the original suede case.
