Lot 458.  Jim Thorpe 1955 Topps All American Card # 37. The front of the card is vg to vg+ with ex corners and a light crease. There is damage to each of the back corners from having been pasted in an album.

Lot 459.  Ticket Stub for the 1938 Army-Navy Game. To complete an 8-2 season, Army won, 14-7, at Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia. The stub has a vertical crease and some scrapbook residue on the reverse. It also exhibits blazing color and is a classic piece of memorabilia from an equally classic rivalry.

Lot 461.  Publications, Metal Tray Featuring Vintage Football Images. The Nov. 1935 issue of Home Arts features wonderful artwork of a mother sewing letters on her son’s football jersey. Waiting nearby, he wears a helmet, shoulder pads and football pants. The magazine has some edge chips. The image is clean and bright. A colorful 11” Carstairs tray depicts a 1950s quarterback. Vg-ex. Also, Grantland Rice’s 1952 Cities Service Football Guide, vg. And “Football for Boys,” 1960 paperback by Joe Kuharich, former Notre Dame and pro coach, g-vg.

Lot 462.  Football Illustrated Annuals for 1937, 1940, 1942, 1944 and 1945. The premier annual of the 1930s-40s, Football Annual featured superb color cover illustrations and extensive black & white photography inside. The 1937, 1940 and 1945 issues are g-vg, and 1942 and 1944, vg. The contents are generally ex or better. Frank Sinkwich, Heisman Trophy winner, is on the cover of the 1942 edition.

Lot 463.  1941 Street & Smith’s Football Pictorial Year Book. Frankie Albert is on the cover of this beautiful ex copy, which is issue #2. There is a small inoffensive news stand “s” in pencil on the cover. Terrific cover and copy.

Lot 464.  Program for the 1941 Army-Notre Dame Football Game at Yankee Stadium. Both teams came into this game undefeated, and they left with unbeaten, although blemished, records. Led by two coaching heavyweights, Earl Blaik and Frank Leahy, the teams battled to a scoreless tie. Future Heisman winner Angelo Bertelli was at left halfback for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won the rest of their games and finished third in the AP poll. Clean vg-ex program.

Lot 465.  1941 Notre Dame at Navy Football Program Featuring Angelo Bertelli. A sophomore, Bertelli won the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 1943. He is pictured in the program. This game pitted Notre Dame’s Frank Leahy against Navy’s Swede Larson. The Fighting Irish dealt the Midshipmen their only defeat, 20-13. Interestingly, the program explains the new player uniform numbering system that colleges had adopted. Quarterbacks were numbered 10-19, centers 50-59, ends 80-89, etc. Attractive vg-ex program with a ¼” edge tear on the front and back covers.

Lot 467.  1940s Spalding Wing-Front Football Helmet. This suspension helmet, size 7 ¼, consists of a leather exterior over a plastic shell with cloth and lambs wool lining. The Spalding logo remains visible on the front. The piping shows wear. Vg.

Lot 468.  1942 Bears-Redskins Original Wire Photo Featuring Bulldog Turner. This outstanding 7” x 11 ¾” action photo from Associated Press captures the determined grimaces on the aged, rugged faces of Chicago ball carrier Bill Osmanski and potential Washington tackler Fred Davis. Ultimately, Ki Aldrich stopped Osmanski after a 20-yard punt return. Pictured also are Turner for the Bears and another Washington player. The photo has a ½” tear on Aldrich’s shoulder and otherwise is vg. It displays extremely well. The original caption from AP is attached. This action photo is unusual because of how well it presents the players’ faces. The Redskins won the 1942 NFL title.

Lot 470.  Washington, D.C. Area Football Collection, featuring memorabilia from American, Catholic, George Washington and Georgetown Universities and nearby high schools. Staff Cassell, head football coach at American University, is the subject of an article and a Jim Berryman cartoon in the 10/24/40 issue of D.C.’s Evening Star, g. Catholic U. makes its presence known with a 1938 program for a game against Ohio’s Miami. The program pictures “Dutch” Bergman, Catholic’s head coach, who was the other halfback in the backfield with Notre Dame’s George Gipp in 1919. Rocco Pirro, who later played professionally with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, was the Catholic team’s quarterback. Vg-ex program. George Washington is represented by student activity ticket booklets for 1939-40 and 1948-49. The latter may be primarily for basketball. There also is a ticket stub, g with a ½” tear, for a 1946 game against Georgetown at Griffith Stadium. Early 1900s college silks are present for both teams, vg+. Georgetown’s 1974 media guide (ex-m) also is offered, along with a ticket stub from a 1950 Villanova game, g+. One of the highlights of this collection is a 1940s book cover from Thompson’s Dairy, ex. Of the remaining 19 items, 16 relate to scholastic football in or near D.C. Nine are programs – for the 1944 (ex+) and 1947 (g) Scholastic All-Star Games at Griffith Stadium, for a 1944 championship game (g), for early 1950s games (4) and for 1974 and 1976 All-Star Games at the University of Maryland. Also, a 1932 schedule for Gilman Country School (g), a 1939 issue of Scholastic Coach (vg-ex), two early 1950s programs for games between the semi-pro Waynesboro Tigers and Car Credit of D.C., a 1966 Atlantic Coast Football League Program, a letterman’s “R,” a pin from Woodrow Wilson High School, three copies of a photo of the Kanawha Prep team and a vintage photo of a team from Alexandria.

Lot 471.  1940s-50s “Varsity Official Size Foot Ball” in the Original Box. The manufacturer is not indicated on the box or the ball, which has leather laces, a bladder and holds air. Note that this is a “Foot Ball,” not a “Football.” Ex+ ball in an f box.
