Lot 472.  Original 1950s Wilson “The Duke” Football. Wilson’s “Duke” model was the official football of the NFL from 1941-70. This example shows moderate wear throughout; the stampings remain very strong. On one of the ball’s top panels, a circular logo below “Wilson” reads “Official Pattern” in the outer circle and “DUKE” in the inner circle. The other top panel says “THE DUKE” below “Wilson.” A must for the aficionado of classic NFL football.

Lot 473.  Football Publications Including Sports Illustrated, Guides and Books. The key book is Alexander M. Weyand’s The Saga of American Football, 1955 stated first printing, ex-library with minimal markings, g hardback, no dj. Captain of the 1915 Army team, he provides a concise history of football and includes an appendix listing All-America players from 1876-1953. Robert Leckie also covers football history in The Story of Football, 1965 first, ex book with minor edge toning, f-g but scarce dj. Other hardbacks are The First Book of Football by John Madden and What a Football Coach Does by Roy Hoopes. The paperbacks are Monday Night Football: 1980 Season, College Football Almanac (1984), Supergoal, and The Football Book, a 1977 “dictionary.” Sixteen issues of Sports Illustrated range from 1960-98 and feature such stars on the covers as Joe Bellino, Joe Theismann (Notre Dame), John Elway (2), Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith (2) and Jerry Rice. Average ex-m with the earlier issues less. In three publications, McDonald’s summarizes Super Bowls I through XI, vg+ to ex. Eleven annuals are offered: Esso’s Football Handbook for 1958, 1961 and 1963; the NCAA’s Official Collegiate Football Record Book for 1952 and 1954, Miller Lite’s Football Handbook for 1984, 1986, 1987 and 2000; the Football Rule Book (high school) for 1973 and Goal Post’s Pro Football for 1977 (g). These publications average ex. Other publications are the 11/17/61 Life with a Minnesota Vikings fold-out cover g; the 12/75 Football Digest with Joe Namath on the cover, g; the 10/46 Sportfolio “Pigskin Preview,” g with Glenn Davis on the cover; and an 11/52 Packard Sports Library booklet that focuses on football rivalries, ex.

Lot 474.  1959 Chicago Bears Media Guide, Brian Piccolo Book. The media guide pictures future Hall of Fame players Doug Atkins, Bill George and Stan Jones. George Halas headed a coaching staff including Sid Luckman, Paddy Driscoll and George Allen, and legendary college coach Clark Shaughnessy. Forty pages. Ex appearance with a 1” tear in the bottom front along the spine. Jeannie Morris tells the story of the tragic hero of the movie “Brian’s Song” in Brian Piccolo: A Short Season, 1972 hardback, nm book almost like new, ex-m dj except for a 1 ½” tear at the bottom near the spine.

Lot 475.  Baltimore Colts Memorabilia. Key item is a copy of John F. Steadman’s book, Football’s Miracle Men: The Baltimore Colts’ Story, 1959 first edition hardback, g book, no dj. Other items are two Johnny Unitas “Golden Arm” glasses, two Baltimore Colts glasses, a 5 ¾” x 7 ¾” reprint of a 1954 program, a Colts patch and small license plate, a Colts swizel stick and a Johnny Unitas’ Colt Lanes oversized pencil. These items average ex to ex-m with some less.

Lot 476.  1960s Tudor Tru-Action Electric Football Game. This vintage game is housed in its original box. More unusual, the goal posts and plastic player pieces are also housed in their original box. As the metal field vibrates, the players advance toward their respective end zones. The metal field and the two boxes are vg; the players are ex-m.

Lot 478.  9 Football Books Including Lombardi, Grant, Pro Football Experience. All hardbacks but one. Five are by or about pro players: 1. Lot 479.  Stanford vs. Michigan Rose Bowl Bronze Medallion. Stanford was still the “Indians” when this medallion was struck. The obverse, features a football scene with “57th Annual Rose Bowl” and the teams’ names around the edge. The reverse has images of the stadium, a parade, a float and roses and says “Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, Calif., 1972.” Nm-m. Stanford won this game, 13-12.

Lot 480.  Wood Bleacher Seat from New Orleans’ Tulane Stadium, which served as the home of the Tulane Green Wave, the Sugar Bowl for almost 50 years and the New Orleans Saints 1967-74. The final game played in the stadium was Super Bowl IX in January 1975. The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated Minnesota, 16-6, to begin its string of 1970s Super Bowl triumphs. With “22” engraved on it, the seat is 17 ¾” wide x about 5 ½” deep and 1 ½” thick. It comes with an engraved metal plaque that says, inside a football, “My Seat from Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, La.” It also says “NCAA, NFL, Sugar Bowl and LHSAA,” for Louisiana High School Athletic Association. The stadium was demolished in 1980.

Lot 481.  5 Green Bay Packers Yearbooks, 1973-76. Official yearbooks for 1973 and 1976. Chester Marcol and Ron Widby are on the cover of the 1973 issue, g-vg. Fred Carr stands over Terry Bradshaw on the cover of the 1976 yearbook, vg-ex cover, nm interior. Also, for 1974-76, Sports Focus yearbook-style publications. John Brockington is on the cover of the 1974 issue (vg), Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr 1975 (ex+) and Lynn Dickey 1976 (ex+).

Lot 482.  7 Full 1975 Tickets for WFL Memphis Southmen Games. The Southmen, better known as the “Grizzlies,” were one of the better entries in the short-lived World Football League, which began play in 1974 and folded shortly before the conclusion of the 1975 season. The tickets, for various seats in Sections 5 or 26 at Memphis Memorial Stadium, are ex to ex-m. Two are for Game 3, and five are for Game 6.
