Lot 469.  “Grandstand and Stadium Design” by William N. Woodbury. Published by the American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc., this 1947 first edition provides the tables, formulas and insights for designing sports stadiums ranging from the high school to professional level. It is filled with photos of pro baseball and football stadiums and local stadiums as well. Vg-ex cover and no dj as issued. The inside is ex-m with the owner’s name or company stamped in four places. Uncommon book.

Lot 470.  Eight Books, Including the Harold Seymour Trilogy, of Baseball History. The three volumes by Cornell University Ph.D. and history professor Seymour remain the definitive scholarly history of baseball. The first volume, “Baseball: The Early Years,” appeared in 1960, and “Baseball: The Golden Age” followed in 1971. These books are part of a two-volume set. No dj as issued, ex. Seymour published “Baseball: The People’s Game” in 1990. Nm book and dj. All three appear to be first editions. Lot 476.  Instructions from 3 Spalding Books, Mickey Cochrane on How to Play Baseball. Published in the 1930s, these three paperbacks are part of Spalding’s “Red Cover” Series of athletic handbooks. Two are attributed to John B. Foster, “How to Bat,” No 80R in the “Red Cover” Series, and “How to Catch and How to Run Bases,” No. 496. The first is vg-ex (cover crease) and the second is ex. Both were copyrighted in 1935. The third volume, “How to Pitch,” is unattributed. Copyrighted in 1934, it is No. 479. All three are illustrated with pictures of future Hall of Fame players. Vg-ex. Mickey Cochrane’s instructions appear in his 1939 book, “Baseball: The Fan’s Game,” 1939 stated first edition hardback, no dj, vg book with owner’s name inside. These are hardbacks, and so are: “Playing America’s Game” by Michael L. Cooper and “Ted Williams’ Hit List.” Paperbacks are on Curt Flood and Willie Mays. “Senior Professional Baseball 1989-1990” is the most interesting periodical. Nm copy. There are five SABR publications: the excellent “Nineteenth Century Stars,” two “National Pastime” issues and one “Baseball Research Journal.” Enjoyable reading and learning here.

Lot 779.  “The Science of Baseball,” 1922 First Edition by Byrd Douglas. This 191-page book, published by Thos. E. Wilson & Co., provides a thoughtful analysis of playing each position, as well as batting and base running. It is illustrated with photos of John McGraw, George Burns, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Emil Meusel, Frank Baker and others. Douglas played baseball at Vanderbilt and Princeton and then coached at each school. He led Vanderbilt to the Southern Intercollegiate Championship in 1921. Eventually, he left baseball and became a lawyer and then a judge in Tennessee. Price on the front end-page. Ex-m book, no dj as issued.
