Lot 320.  1939 “Look” with Joe DiMaggio, 1940s Magazines with Newhouser, Cooper as Lou Gehrig. These large-format magazines feature excellent color photography on their covers. DiMaggio and his future first wife, actress Dorothy Arnold, are on the cover of the Oct. 10, 1939 issue of “Look.” They married on Nov. 19, 1939, and divorced on May 2, 1944. Inside are articles on DiMaggio and World Series heroes, “Does Notre Dame Get the Football Breaks?” and Hitler and World War II. Vg to vg+. Actor Gary Cooper as Gehrig is on the cover of the July 28, 1942 issue of “Look.” The magazine reviews “The Pride of the Yankees,” in which Babe Ruth plays himself, and offers an article on Joe Gordon as “King of the Second Basemen.” Vg-ex. Newhouser is posed to deliver a pitch on the cover of the July 19, 1947 “Collier’s.” He is the subject of a three-page article. Ex issue. The cover has a small chip along the right edge, and the label is partially removed.

Lot 325.  Baseball Grab Bag – Pins, Publications – and an “SI” with Ali on the Cover. This group includes a set of five commemorative pins from the 1997 All-Star Game played in Cleveland. Mint in the original box, the pins represent All-Star Games in the city in 1935, 1954, 1963 and 1981, as well as 1997. From an earlier time, there is a 1959 “Dope Book” from “The Sporting News” with Bob Turley on the cover. Vg. Finally, there are three full issues of “Sports Illustrated”: July 12, 1965, Maury Wills cover, vg-ex, no label; July 30, 1973, Carlton Fisk cover, ex; and April 25, 1988, Muhammad Ali cover, g+ to vg.

Lot 326.  Spalding’s 1909 “How to Bat” and 1912 “How to Pitch.” These are early editions of the classic Spalding publications. Jesse F. Matteson is the editor of the 96-page softcover on batting. It is extensively illustrated with photos of the era’s top batters, including Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Clean vg-ex copy with a chip in the upper right corner of the cover, a small cover tear and minor paper loss at the top and bottom of the spine. Written by John B. Foster, the 126-page publication on pitching has photos of such top stars as Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard. Nice vg. Both tutorials have advertising at the back that includes player-endorsed bats. Scarce, and usually found in lower condition.

Lot 327.  1919 New York Sporting Goods Company Spring & Summer Catalog. From Schoverling, Daly & Gales, this 168-page catalog devotes 19 pages to baseball equipment, 13 to tennis and 10 to golf. It also offers bicycles, roller skates, camping gear and equipment for other sports and outdoors activities. Among the highlights are drawings of Louisville Slugger decal bats for Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Home Run Baker. The catalog has a stain in the upper outside corner that affects the front cover and approximately one-half of the pages; otherwise, it is vg-ex.

Lot 328.  1933 Hardbound “Who’s Who in Major League Baseball.” Published by Grover C. Buxton of Chicago and compiled by sportswriter Harold (Speed) Johnson, this scarce reference is what every annual should be. Consisting of 544 pages, it devotes a full page each to several hundred baseball players. Each player is represented by a large photo. In addition, the publication provides the player’s full record and a biographical sketch with career highlights. The “Who’s Who” starts with Earl “Sparky” Adams and ends with Tom Zachary. Judge Landis, managers, owners and other personalities also are profiled. The back cover and the last four pages of this copy are detached. Otherwise, it is vg. Scarce.

Lot 329.  April 25, 1938 Chicago at Pittsburgh Program and Ticket Stub. The program folds out to display four panels, or eight pages. It is neatly scored in pencil for an 8-6 Pirates win. Familiar names in the pre-printed lineup include Stan Hack, Billy Herman, Rip Collins and Tony Lazzeri for the Cubs and Arky Vaughan and Paul and Lloyd Waner for the Pirates. Ex. The ticket stub (rain check) for a grand stand seat has a partial punch hole in the upper left corner and a small chip in the upper right; otherwise, it is ex-m.

Lot 330.  2 1950s Baseball Programs: Phils at Cubs and Cards at Giants. The 1952 Chicago Cubs “Official Program” is a four-page scorecard pre-printed for a game with St. Louis but has rosters partially entered for a game with Philadelphia. G+ with two small pen scribbles on the front cover. The 1957 New York Giants program is scored for the first game of an Aug. 20 doubleheader; the Cardinals won, 4-3. The 24-page program offers a profile of Johnny Antonelli. Vg with writing on the front and back covers and the scorecard loose.

Lot 331.  1953 Philadelphia Athletics and Washington Nationals Yearbooks. The Nationals yearbook has a vg-ex cover and ex pages. The A’s yearbook has a vg+ cover. Sometime in the past 60 years, the upper right corners of the pages and back cover provided rodent bedding. This unauthorized use affects almost solely the edge of photos.

Lot 332.  Aug. 1953 “Police Gazette” Cover with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Baseball Players. Crosby wears a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform and Hope, Cleveland Indians attire, on the cover of the complete issue, which is vg+. Crosby and Hope were part-owners of the respective teams. Their rivalry and friendship are discussed in an article in the magazine, which has an article on the Milwaukee Braves, a full-page color image of boxer Mike McTigue and a small photo of the Harlem Globetrotters’ Goose Tatum.

Lot 333.  5 1964-72 New York Mets Programs and 1964 and 1982 Yearbooks. The programs, each generally approximately 30 pages, are for: 1964 vs. St. Louis, World’s Fair edition, vg. 1966 vs. Chicago, scored, f. 1970 vs. Chicago, rain check stapled inside, vg. 1971 vs. St. Louis, vg. And 1972 vs. Philadelphia, scored, rain check stapled to scorecard, back page separated, p-f. The yearbooks are the 1964 revised edition with Willard Mullin cover artwork, g-vg, and 1982, ex. Seven publications.

Lot 334.  1963 Yankees and 1975 Pirates Yearbooks and 7 Other Sports Publications. The covers of the New York yearbook are detached and p; the interior is vg-ex, with stains on pages 1-2. The Pittsburgh yearbook is ex-m+. A 1972 White Sox at Yankees program is g. There are two other baseball publications: “Sports Review: Baseball” 1958 issue with Burdette on the cover, g-vg, and Street & Smith’s 1976 “Baseball Yearbook,” Lynn cover, ex-m. Two issues of “Sports Illustrated” are included: Sept. 16, 1963, articles on Bold Ruler, Koufax, Nicklaus, Palmer and Ron Mix, vg-ex; and July 8, 1968, Ted Williams cover and article, writing on cover, f-g. Football is featured in “Sports Review’s 1966 Pro Football” issue, f (some pages clipped); and Street & Smith’s 1973 “College Football Yearbook,” vg.

Lot 335.  1994 Baseball All-Star Game Program and 2 Used Box Seat Tickets. The N.L. won this hitting-fest at Pittsburgh’s Three River Stadium in the bottom of the 10th inning, 8-7, when Tony Gwynn singled and scored on a double of Moises Alou. The program is ex. Both tickets have been punched with a star-shaped device; otherwise, they are ex.

Lot 336.  21 Publications from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). This collection comprises three topical publications, 14 issues of “The National Pastime” and four issues of “The Baseball Research Journal.” All of the publications are softcovers, and all are different. Nineteenth century baseball players are the subjects of two books: “Nineteenth Century Stars” by Robert Tiemann and Mark Rucker, 1989, ex, and “Baseball’s First Stars” by Frederick Ivor-Campbell, Tiemann and Rucker, 1996, ex. Rucker, Mark Alvarez and Tom Shieber are responsible for “Baseball for the Fun of It,” 1997, vg+ to ex. “The National Pastime” issues average ex to ex-m and are from 1983, Spring 1984, Spring 1985, Winter 1985, Spring 1986, Winter 1987, Spring 1988, No. 10 1990, No. 11 1992, No. 13 1993, No. 14 1994, No. 16 1996, No. 17 1997 and No. 18 1998. Lot 337.  5 Books on the Negro Leagues. The scarcest of these books is Robert D. Retort’s self-published 1992 “Pictorial Negro League Legends Album.” The 260-page softcover is extensively illustrated with photos of Negro Leagues players and teams. Retort signed the first title page of the book, which is ex. The other books are: “Only the Ball Was White,” Robert Peterson, 1984 McGraw-Hill softcover, vg. “Negro League Baseball: The Rise and Ruin of a Black Institution,” Neil Lanctot, 2004 apparent first-edition hardcover, nm book and dust jacket. “A Complete History of the Negro Leagues 1884 to 1955,” Mark Ribowsky, 1995 apparent first edition, ex-m hardback and ex dust jacket. Lot 338.  3 Sports Books with CDs or a DVD – “And the Crowd Goes Wild,” “Reel Baseball,” Etc. Two books, both by Joe Garner, are in a leather-like slipcover: “And the Fans Roared” and “And the Crowd Goes Wild.” Both books in this “Special Edition Gift Set” are hardbacks, the latter published in 1999, and the former, in 2000. The books, dust jackets and slip covers are nm. Each is accompanied by two CDs with narration by Bob Costas. The other book is “Reel Baseball: Baseball’s Golden Era the Way American Witnessed It – In the Movie Newsreels” by Les Krantz, 2006 stated first edition hardback, nm book, ex-m dust jacket. It includes a DVD featuring original baseball newsreels and is hosted by Joe Garagiola. Excellent reading, viewing or listening, and gifts!
