Lot 336.  21 Publications from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). This collection comprises three topical publications, 14 issues of “The National Pastime” and four issues of “The Baseball Research Journal.” All of the publications are softcovers, and all are different. Nineteenth century baseball players are the subjects of two books: “Nineteenth Century Stars” by Robert Tiemann and Mark Rucker, 1989, ex, and “Baseball’s First Stars” by Frederick Ivor-Campbell, Tiemann and Rucker, 1996, ex. Lot 337.  5 Books on the Negro Leagues. The scarcest of these books is Robert D. Retort’s self-published 1992 “Pictorial Negro League Legends Album.” The 260-page softcover is extensively illustrated with photos of Negro Leagues players and teams. Retort signed the first title page of the book, which is ex. The other books are: “Only the Ball Was White,” Robert Peterson, 1984 McGraw-Hill softcover, vg. “Negro League Baseball: The Rise and Ruin of a Black Institution,” Neil Lanctot, 2004 apparent first-edition hardcover, nm book and dust jacket. “A Complete History of the Negro Leagues 1884 to 1955,” Mark Ribowsky, 1995 apparent first edition, ex-m hardback and ex dust jacket. Lot 338.  3 Sports Books with CDs or a DVD – “And the Crowd Goes Wild,” “Reel Baseball,” Etc. Two books, both by Joe Garner, are in a leather-like slipcover: “And the Fans Roared” and “And the Crowd Goes Wild.” Both books in this “Special Edition Gift Set” are hardbacks, the latter published in 1999, and the former, in 2000. The books, dust jackets and slip covers are nm. Each is accompanied by two CDs with narration by Bob Costas. The other book is “Reel Baseball: Baseball’s Golden Era the Way American Witnessed It – In the Movie Newsreels” by Les Krantz, 2006 stated first edition hardback, nm book, ex-m dust jacket. Lot 341.  10 Original Issues of Lew Lipset’s “The Old Judge” Newsletter. Lew remains one of the top contributors to the development of baseball card collecting. Beginning in the spring of 1985 and continuing well into 1994, he published a periodic newsletter in which he updated checklists, traced the history of various card issues and provided commentary, often controversial, on the status of the hobby. This collection comprises issues from April 1989 (No. 23) through June 1992 (No. 43). The other issues are from June 1989 (No. 24); April 1990 (No. 30); Aug. 1990 (No. 32); March 1991 (No. 36); April 1991 (No. 37); July 1991 (No. 39); Sept. 1991 (No. 40); and Dec. 1991 (No. 41). These issues average ex; No. 39 has minor writing (“040”) on the cover. There is also a photocopy of issue No. 22 from Feb. 1989.

Lot 343.  Catalogs for Sotheby’s Barry Halper Auction and Several Other Auctions. The three catalogs for the 1999 Halper auction are nm in an ex-m slipcover. Three catalogs are for auctions by Leland’s in 2000 and 2002 (two different), and a fourth is for a 2006 Hunt’s auction. The 2002 Leland’s catalogs are hardbacks.

Lot 349.  2 1950 Programs for Games Between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia’s Whiz Kids. Both Pittsburgh programs are scored, one for a June 11 game won by the Pirates, 5-4 in 12 innings, and the other by the Phils, 4-2. The earlier program has the results added in pencil to the cover and otherwise is vg-ex. The August program is f-g with a chipped corner on the front cover and approximately 15 percent of the back cover missing. The interior is complete. Each program has separate full-page photos Ralph Kiner and Bing Crosby.

Lot 354.  1971 NLCS Giants at Pirates Program and Ticket Stub. Pittsburgh won the series in four games and went on to defeat Baltimore in the World Series. The 40-page program is scored in pencil for the deciding game. Vg-ex. The ticket stub, composed of two sections, is for Game 3. Ex.

Lot 356.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1975 NLCS Program, Regular-Season Programs, Yearbooks, Etc. Fourteen publications. The Pirates faced Cincinnati in the NLCS game. Ex-m+. The yearbooks both are from the 1977 season; one is ex+, and the other, vg-ex. A media guide represents the 1983 season; vg-ex. Two publications were not issued by the Pirates: the June 24, 1963 “Sports Illustrated” with Roy Face on the cover, ex, and the 1988 Baseball Hall of Fame yearbook, which has inductee Willie Stargell on the cover, ex. There are seven regular-season programs: 1975 vs. San Francisco, vg-ex; 1978 vs. Mets, Dave Parker cover, ex; 1982 vs. Reds, ex-m; 1990 vs. Mets, vg-ex; 1991(2) ex and 2002 spring training, g, scored for a game with the Phils and including a ticket stub. A 1992 Pirates “Fun & Entertainment Guide” is also included.

Lot 357.  Pittsburgh Pirates Primarily 1970s Yerabooks, NLCS Programs and Scorebooks. Twenty-eight publications, including yearbooks for 1975, 1976 (writing on front cover), 1977, 1978 (2) and 1981. These yearbooks average ex. The NLCS programs are for series with Cincinnati in 1975 and 1979. Led by Chuck Tanner, the 1979 Pirates won their last World Series championship. Nm. The regular-season programs are for: 1971 vs. Philadelphia (scored); 1975 (2) vs. New York and Montreal; 1977 vs. Chicago; 1978 (3) vs. Phils, Dodgers and Expos; 1978 (2) vs. Phils; 1980 (3), two different covers, vs. Phils; 1982 vs. Reds; 1983 vs. Cards (scored); 1984 (2) vs. Cubs, one scored; 1985 vs. Reds and 1988 (Bonds cover) vs. Phils. Except for 1972, 1982 and 1983, these programs are almost all nm or better. Also included are a 1984 Pirates calendar and a 1995 “Build-It-Yourself Forbes Field” softcover book.

Lot 358.  5 Books on Pittsburgh Baseball: the Pirates, the Waners, Clemente and the Negro Leagues. Two of these books are biograpical: In “Remember Roberto,” author Jim O’Brien recounts stories of “Clemente Recalled by Teammates, Family, Friends and Fans.” The 1994 first printing hardback is inscribed (personalized) by O’Brien on the inside of the flyleaf. The book is ex-m in a vg+ to ex dust jacket. Paul and Lloyd Waner are the subjects of “Big and Little Poison,” a 2003 softcover by Clifton Blue Parker, ex. Pittsburgh native John McCollister wrote two books on the Pirates: “Tales from the Pirates Dugout: a Collection of the Greatest Pirates Ever Told,” 2003, and “Tales from the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates: Remebering ‘The Fam-A-Lee’,” 2005. Both books are ex-m+, and the dust jackets are ex. Baseball, including the Negro Leagues, and other sports receive coverage in Rob Ruck’s “Sandlot Seasons: Sport in Black Pittsburgh,” 1987 apparent first edition, nm book and dust jacket.
