Baseball Autographs   40 Lots       »

Lot 108.  Johnny Podres Autographed 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Champs Display. On a 7” x 9” photo that shows him celebrating with teammates after the Dodgers captured the World Championship, Podres wrote: “Who’s a Bum, Oct. 4, 1955” and then signed his name. The photo is matted and framed with Willard Mullin’s “Bum” and the front page of the Oct. 5, 1955 New York “Daily News.” The headline exclaims “Who’s a Bum!” Podres pitched a shutout in Game 7 against the Yankees. He also won Game 2 and was named the Series’ MVP. His autograph, authenticated by Kevin Keating, is nm 7 to nm-m 8. The newspaper exhibits some wrinkles. The various pieces are matted and framed to 17” x 21” and ready for display.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 121.  ONL Giles Baseball Signed by Spahn, Mazeroski, Murtaugh, Burgess and Haddix. Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh autographed the sweet spot. Harvey Haddix signed the north panel; Warren Spahn and another player, the south; and Smoky Burgess and Bill Mazeroski, the east. The ball shows leather loss on three panels; “Official National League” and the Giles facsimile signature are light but readable. The Murtaugh signature is ex to ex-m; the bottom of the “g” is slightly affected by the ball’s condition. Haddix’s autograph is ex to ex-m; Burgess and Maz’, vg-ex to ex; and Spahn’s, vg to vg-ex and significantly affected by the damage to the ball. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $40.

Lot 167.  Ted Williams Autograph and Photo. Mint 9 to gem mint 10 personalized signature on the back of a business card; the personalization could easily be matted out. The autograph comes with an 8” x 10 photo of Williams matted and framed to 13” x 16”. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph. Williams remains the last major leaguer to bat .400 or higher - .406 in 1941. He was an All-Star in all of his 19 seasons, except in his rookie year, when he led the A.L. with 145 RBI and batted .327, and 1952, when he played in only six games because of his service in Korea. He led the A.L. in walks eight times.
Winning Bid $73.

Lot 168.  Ted Williams Autographed Original 1946 International News Photo. The 8” x 10” b&w photo captures Williams scoring after rapping his third home run on a day in which he went four-for-five and drove in eight runs. These heroics by the 27-year-old star enabled the Red Sox to edge Cleveland, 11-10. A tack hole is in each of the upper corners, and the photo has corner creases, a vertical crease in the left border and “alligatoring” that is evident at certain angles to the light. The year and game information are written in the lower border. The caption is present. Williams’ autograph is large and bold, nm-m 8 to mint 9. An uncommon signed photo from early in Williams’ distinguished career. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $152.

Lot 169.  One Dozen Tommy John Autographed Autobiographies. Three hardback and nine softcover copies of “T.J.: My 26 Years in Baseball.” In this 1991 book, John tells the story of his life and career, which were built on perseverance, belief in himself and faith in God. The books are new. Some show minimal shelf wear. John signed the title page of the hardbacks and softcovers. The hardbacks are numbered 16, 35 and 36 of 59, and the paperbacks, 4, 9, 17, 32, 46, 47, 48, 52 and 77 of 87. The autographs, authenticated by Kevin Keating, are gem mint 10.
Winning Bid $55.

Lot 170.  Luis Aparicio Signed Special Red Sox Issue of the Boston “Sunday Herald Traveler.” Mint 9 signature on the cover of the April 11, 1971 edition, which pictures Aparicio with his double-play mate, second baseman Doug Griffin. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph. The 36-page publication deals almost exclusively with the Red Sox. Except for a several numbers written next to player career statistics, this uncommon publication is ex-m. And like the publication, signed images of Aparicio with the Red Sox turn up infrequently.
Winning Bid $20.

Lot 171.  Nick Altrock Vintage Fountain Pen Autograph. For three seasons, 1904-06, Altrock was one of the better pitchers in the majors. In those three seasons, he won 62 games, lost 39 and helped the 1906 Chicago White Sox, the “Hitless Wonders,” to win a World Series. From 1912-53, he was part of the Washington Senators’ coaching staff. Famous for his antics in the coaching box, he helped Al Schacht to become “the Clown Prince of Baseball.” J. G. Taylor Spink campaigned to get Altrock into the Hall of Fame. Altrock died in 1965. His signature is a 10 on a 3.5” x 5.5” section of paper that contains his Sports Co. of America Champions card. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 172.  Yogi Berra Signed April 20, 1957 “Saturday Evening Post” Cover by Earl Mayan. Gem mint 10 signature by Berra on one of 10 “Post” covers by the famous illustrator. Ex-m complete issue. In an article inside, Warren Spahn correctly predicts that the Milwaukee Braves will win the N.L. pennant. Authentication by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 173.  Al Campanis Autographed ONL William White Baseball. Campanis was part of the Dodgers organization for more than 40 years. As a shortstop, he was Jackie Robinson’s double-play partner in Montreal. As a scout, he signed Roberto Clemente for the Dodgers. But in a 1987 TV interview, as vice president of player personnel for LA, he made a racial remark, and his Dodgers career was over. His signature is mint 9 on ball that has a couple of spots of light discoloration, one behind part of his sweet spot autograph. Campanis died in 1998. He played in seven games for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 174.  Carl Hubbell Autographed 1937 Wheaties Advertisement. Mint 9 signature on a 10.75” x 13.5” ad from the back cover of the “Saturday Evening Post.” The ad has a rough right edge and a couple of edge tears that could easily be matted out. For a back cover, its condition is exceptional. A nine-time All-Star and two-time N.L. MVP, Hubbell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1947. He won at least 20 games in five seasons. He died in an auto accident in 1988. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $68.

Lot 175.  Reggie Jackson (HoF) Autograph on the Cover of the June 3, 1974 Issue of “Time.” Mint 9 autograph with authentication by Kevin Keating. Inside, an article identifies Jackson as “The Muscle and Soul of the A’s Dynasty.” The label has been removed from the cover; otherwise, the issue is ex+.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 176.  George L. Kelly Signed 1930 Check. Mint 9 signature by the Hall of Fame first baseman. Kelly’s career included a long stint in New York with the Giants and stops in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago (Cubs) and Brooklyn. High Pockets died in 1984. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $20.

Lot 177.  Sandy Koufax Autographed 1981 Perez-Steele 1981 Fifth Series Hall of Fame Postcard. Mint 9 to gem mint 10 signature authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 178.  Willie Mays Autographed “Life” 1972 Double-Page Spread. Mint 9 to gem mint 10 signature on this 13” x 20.5” center-spread, which will be the foundation of an impressive display if framed. The spread marks his trade from the Giants to the Mets and presents 20 of his Topps cards and one Bowman issued from 1951-72. The cover of this May 26, 1972 issue is vg-ex; the interior is ex. The shooting of George Wallace is the cover story. Kevin Keating authenticated Mays’ autograph.
Winning Bid $45.

Lot 179.  Stan Musial Signed 10.25” x 14” Hamm’s Beer Ad. From a 1949 issue of “Look.” The autograph, authenticated by Kevin Keating, is gem mint 10, and the ad, ex-m. Because “Look’s” lower circulation, ads from it are much less common than ads from “Life.” Matted and framed, this autographed advertisement will make a great display piece.
Winning Bid $55.
