Lot 184.  1898 Cigar Box Lid with N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter Champions – Ewing, Cody, Etc. The lid is from a box of Big Run cigars, an American Tobacco Co. brand. By 1890, John Buchanan Duke absorbed his major competitors, including Allen & Ginter, and formed American Tobacco. The artwork Allen & Ginter used for its famous 1888 World’s Champions cards were now the property of the new company. American Tobacco displayed six champions and other artwork on the inside of the cigar box lid: baseball player Buck Ewing, rifle shooter Buffalo Bill Cody, runner L. E. Myers, cyclist Percy Stone, billiards player J. Schaefer and pedestrian James Albert. The lid outside has the Big Run name, a tax stamp and a stain. The inside, with the artwork, has a stain immediately left of center at the top. Measuring 8” x 4.75”, it displays very nicely and will make an excellent complement to a 19th century or Allen & Ginter collection.

Lot 191.  Hack Wilson (HoF) Oct. 11, 1930 Montreal “La Presse” Rare Newspaper Supplement. “La Presse” published a series of color images of athletes, including hockey, tennis and baseball stars, in the 1930s. This specific color-tinted 11.25” x 17.5” supplement doesn’t seem to be on any readily accessible checklist. Contained within a 19.25” x 23.25” frame, it exhibits a number of light creases, minor discoloration along some edges and appears to be attached at the corners to a backing. After three years with the New York Giants, Wilson joined the Cubs in 1926 as their center fielder. The year of the “La Presse” supplement was his best in the majors. He slugged 56 home runs, contributed 191 RBI and batted .356 with a .723 slugging average. As we researched this item, one veteran collector told us he hasn’t seen a “La Presse” baseball premium in 20 years. If this example is not one-of-a-kind, then it likely is one of very few in existence!
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 192.  1933 R333 DeLong #13 Rabbit Maranville (HoF). For this issue, this card is unusually and exceptionally nice. Vg-ex with a light crease visible only on the back.
Winning Bid $148.

Some other good players are in the photo too, Woody English, Riggs Stephenson, Lon Warneke, Charlie Root and Babe Herman. The 8” x 10” b&w photo is matted and in a vintage 12.5” x 14.5” wood frame that has a wood backing. The photo has one crease in the upper right corner, and another in the lower left. Focus and contrast are sharp. A few photos of individual players have surfaced. This is the first group photo we have seen for Herbert’s.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 195.  1934 “Mickey Mouse Plays Baseball” Cereal Box Figures. Six figures of Mickey as a baseball player cut from a cereal box panel, which is partially intact and includes the title and a figure of Mickey as “The Pinch Hitter.” Other figures depict him as “The Base Stealer,” a fielder catching “A High One,” “Warming the Bench,” “The No Hit No Run ‘Pitcher’,” and “Mickey Fielding a High One.” G-vg. Rare!
Winning Bid $110.
