“Cinema Arts” Limited Edition 1937 First Issue with Top Stars and Jaro Fabry Artwork.

Lot 394. “Cinema Arts” Limited Edition 1937 First Issue with Top Stars and Jaro Fabry Artwork. Only three issues of this magnificent film magazine were produced. This copy of Vol. 1 No. 1 from June 1937 is a 90-page hardcover approximately 11.25” x 14.25” filled with black & white photos and illustrations. It is No. 1199 from a limited edition of 2,000. During Hollywood’s Golden Age, Fabry was a prolific and respected producer of illustrations depicting major stars and pin-up girls. The fantastic illustration of Greta Garbo on the cover of this issue is his work. His color artwork of Marlene Dietrich is inside. The publication presents nicely illustrated overviews of the feature films “Shall We Dance,” “The Prince and the Pauper,” Captains Courageous,” “A Star is Born,” “Lost Horizon” and “Slave Ship.” An article titled “Director’s Dilemma” discusses with humor the task of deciding which actors to cast as Rhett Butler and Scarlet O’Hara in “Gone with the Wind.” Beautiful professional portraits of performers are abundant – Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, Wallace Beery, Joan Blondell, Merle Oberon, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Olivia de Havilland, Claudette Colbert, Rosalind Russell, Myrna Loy and Garbo. This issue is vg with wear on the corners and edges of the cloth covers, a scuff on Garbo’s image on the front cover, and some small scuffs on the back cover. The pages are ex to ex-m and likely to provide hours of entertainment and some insights concerning Hollywood of the 1930s. The owner’s name is on the first inside page, which contains the number of the limited edition copy. Winning Bid $25.
