In a handwritten 1973 response to a New York Yankees batboy, Averill discusses his success in a Cleveland doubleheader with Washington. He signed as “Earl.” His reply and signature are nm-m 8 on an 8.5” x 11” page that includes the request. A star in center field from 1929-39 for the Indians, Averill was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975. He died in 1983. His mailing envelope, postmarked 1973, accompanies his response.
