Lot 359. 6 Collector Plates – Mickey Mantle (3), Don Mattingly, Bobby Thomson, Walter Johnson. All three Mantle plates are from Sports Impressions. Two the same are Gold Editions from the “Sports Superstar Collector Plate Series”: Mickey Mantle, “Greatest Switch Hitter.” These 10.5” plates, with a gold rim and facsimile Mantle autograph, feature eight images of Mantle by Joseph Catalano, whose excellent artwork has appeared on numerous Sports Impressions issues. Numbered 983 and 1058 of 2,401, each plate is mint and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The third Sports Impressions plate of Mantle is from the Hamilton Collection, a 6.5” plate titled “The Legendary Mickey Mantle” from the “Best of Baseball Plate Collection.” Robert Tanenbaum provided six images of Mantle. Tanenbaum is widely recognized for his movie poster and Native American art. The plate is mint and comes with a certificate. Sports Impressions is the source of the 1987 Don Mattingly plate, which uses Brian Johnson artwork. The 10.25” gold-rimmed Autographed Edition plate recognizes Mattingly as “Player of the Year” and has a facsimile autograph in gold. The plate is #251 of 2,500, mint, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and the original box. The Bradford Exchange is associated with the two other plates. From its “Great Moments in Baseball” series: “Bobby Thomson: Shot Heard ’Round the World” by Stephen Gardner, 8.25” plate, gold rim, mint, CoA. And, from the “Legends of Baseball” series from Delphi, recommended by the Bradford Exchange, “Walter Johnson: The Shutout” by Jeff Barson, 8.25” fine porcelain plate rimmed with 22-karat gold, mint with a CoA and Delphi collector card.
