Lot 76. Al Gionfriddo Signed Photo of His Famous 1947 World Series Catch of DiMaggio’s Line Drive. Boldly signed 11”x14” sepia action photo from the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 6. With the New York Yankees leading in the series 3 games to 2, Gionfriddo and his Brooklyn Dodger teammates needed a win to keep their Series hopes alive. As Joe DiMaggio came to bat with two outs and two runners on base, the Dodgers led, 8-5. He soon delivered a screaming line drive toward the 415-foot sign in left center that looked like a hit. As Gionfriddo ran for the ball, his hat flew off. As he approached the fence, he twisted his body and snagged the ball in his gloved right hand. And as a result, the Dodgers still had a chance to win the World Series. Gionfriddo’s autograph is gem mint 10 on the nm-m black & white photo, which shows him braced against the fence with the ball in his glove! He added “10-5-47.” PSA/DNA Pre-Certified. Winning Bid $15.
