Lot 733. John Wayne Magazine Covers, Sheet Music and a Wire Photo. The quintessential movie war and Western hero, Wayne earned the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in “True Grit” in 1970. For his contributions to American Culture, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Wayne is on the covers of seven magazines with color photos and labels unless otherwise noted, and on the cover of the 1979 Liberty Bowl program as well: “Picturegoer,” June 3, 1939 with Claire Trevor, no label, small chip in the lower right corner, ex. “Time,” March 3, 1952, article across five pages, vg-ex. “Argosy,” Nov. 1974, cover illustration by Norman Rockwell, four pages inside, ex. 1979 Liberty Bowl Program, cover art by David Moses, ex-m. “Look,” Aug. 2, 1960, cover photo of Wayne with his wife Pilar and a six-page article, vg-ex. “Life” (3), May 7, 1965, vg-ex; July 11, 1969, illustration with Dustin Hoffman, vg+ to ex, and Jan. 28, 1972, sepia artwork, ex. Wayne is on the cover of sheet music for “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,” with Joanne Dru,1954, ex+, and “The High and the Mighty,” with other members of the cast, music by Dimitri Tiomkin, 1954, vg+. A 1953 International News Soundphoto 7” x 9” b&w photo shows Wayne and some associates after he was granted a divorce from his second wife, Esperanza. The divorce was characterized as “the Battle of the Century.” Among the individuals with Wayne are director Budd Boetticher and producer Robert Fellows. The photo is ex-m, has the I.N.P. stamp on the back and a caption from the news service attached. Eleven Wayne collectibles. Winning Bid $40.
