7 “Views of Interest” Series of 1938-40 Cards from R. & J. Hill – a Total of 334 Cards.

Lot 669. 7 “Views of Interest” Series of 1938-40 Cards from R. & J. Hill – a Total of 334 Cards. These 2.5” x 3” cards have real-photo hand-colored fronts and extensive descriptions on the backs. Each photo presents an image of an architectural work or landscape, primarily in England, but also in Canada. In 1938-39, the Hill organization offered its customers five series of cards, each with 48 cards, featuring scenes of England. In 1940, it added another 48-card series with Canadian landmarks. That accounts for six series. The seventh series included here is a variation of Series 1. The cards have the same fronts, but one variation has Sunripe and Spinet Oval backs, while the other has Spinet House backs. These series are complete, except for the Fifth Series, which is missing two cards. The cards have a like-new appearance. Subjects of the English series include the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, the Marble Arch, Canterbury Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, Windsor Castle, Loch Lomond, Penzance, Tintern Abbey, the Bridge of Sighs, Stratford-on-Avon and, literally, hundreds more. Among the scenes on the cards representing Canada are Banff, Jasper National Park, Victoria (inner harbour), Chateau Frontenac, the Heights of Quebec, Lake Louise, Moose Jaw, Montreal, Niagara Falls, the Kings Highway, Totem Poles in Vancouver, and Toronto. Ex-m+ to nm+. Winning Bid $30.
