Lot 634. 1 1954 and 17 1955 “Sports Illustrated” Issues. All issues have mailing labels. The magazine’s fourth issue, dated Sept. 6, 1954, has photo features on Robin Roberts and Stan Musial and columns by Herman Hickman and Red Smith. Vg+ to ex. One of the highlights of 17 issues from 1955 is a four-part series on Tenzing Norgay by James Ramsey Ullman, an American climber and writer. A Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer, Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, in 1953, became the first certified climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Here are some other highlights of the 1955 issues: Oct. 3 with football HoFer Doak Walker on the cover (ex), March 14 with Wallace “Buddy” Werner (ex+) and Nov. 21 with Skeeter Werner (writing on the cover). The Werners were Olympic skiers. In 1969, Walker and Skeeter Werner married. Walker and Buddy Werner both died in separate skiing accidents. Covers for Jan. 10 (Santa Anita, vg+ to ex), Feb. 28 (Hialeah, ex) and July 18 (Swaps, vg+) focus on thoroughbred racing. Swaps won the 1955 Kentucky Derby and was the 1956 Horse of the Year. The Oct. 31 issue (p, complete with ex pages) previews the National Horse Show and features an article on Notre Dame’s Frank Leahy. Other cover subjects are: Betty di Bugnano, a model, Feb. 21, label partially removed, otherwise ex-m. Bowler Steve Nagy, winner of two American Bowling Congress gold medals in 1952, March 28, ex. Tenzing Norgay, with Part I of a four-part series on his life, April 25, vg+. Relay Runner Tom Courtney, who subsequently won 2 gold medals in the 1956 Olympics, May 2, vg+ to ex; also, Part II of the Norgay series. Zale Parry, American pioneer scuba diver, underwater photographer, actress and stunt double, May 23, vg-ex. Ed Furgol, winner of the 1954 U.S. Open, June 20, vg+. The Princeton Band, substantial football coverage in the issue, Oct. 17, ex. Bob Pellegrini, future College HoF member, Nov. 7, scuff where the label was removed, otherwise vg+ to ex. Also, May 9, ballooning cover, Kentucky Derby preview, Part III of a series on Norgay, ex. And May 16, Kentucky Derby coverage including a William Faulkner article, Part IV (final) of the Norgay series, ex-m. Winning Bid $20.
