Lot 616. 3 Kentucky Derby Programs, a Quiz Book, Derby Festival Programs and More. Ten publications, including Derby programs for 1993 (vg-ex, 44 pages), 1996 (vg with pencil writing inside, 56 pages) and 2003 (vg+ with some writing on the cover and inside, 84 pages). The winners were Sea Hero, Grindstone and Funny Cide, winner also of the Preakness, the first New York-bred horse to win the Derby and the first gelding since 1929. A copy of the four-page “Louisville Daily Sports News” for Churchill Downs accompanies the 1996 program, g-vg. Other publications: 5. “The Official Kentucky Derby Quiz Book” by Randall S. Baron and Philip Von Borries, a 160-page softcover loaded with Derby history in a competitive, question and multiple choice answer format. Nm. 6-7. Kentucky Derby Festival programs for 1986 and 1994. These programs list Festival activities, present stories on local people and places, and contain advertising. The 1986 program is ex-m with 128 pages, and the 1994 edition, nm-m with 100 pages. 8-10. Three editions of “Call to the Post,” for 1987 (ex+, 78 pages), 1991 (ex, 80 pages) and 1993 (nm, 96 pages). These publications also present the Derby Festival schedule, with many stories and advertising as well. The 1993 edition has an article titled “Triple Playback” in which “winning jockeys recall Triple Crown victories 15, 20 and 50 years ago.” Another article covers “the storybook rebirth of Kentucky’s cherished Calumet Farm and the courageous knight who saved it.” Each issue offers some good reading on racing.
