Lot 577. World Premiere Program for “The Pride of the Yankees – The Life of Lou Gehrig.” This 1942 movie is a tribute to the New York Yankees’ first baseman, who was on 37 when he died a year earlier from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, widely known today as “Lou Gehrig’s disease.” Starring Gary Cooper as Gehrig and Teresa Wright as his wife, the movie received an Academy Award for film editing. It also earned 10 additional nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Cooper) and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Wright). The movie is considered to be one of the most inspiring films in American cinema. It premiered at 40 RKO Metropolitan Theatres on July 15, 1942. A four page 5.5” x 8.5” program for the premiere at the RKO 58th St. Theatre in New York City has Cooper and Wright on the cover.
