On July 5, Doby became the second African-American to play Major League baseball in the 20th century, and the first to play for an American League team. After he joined Cleveland, the Indians faced the Yankees in New York only on Aug. 1-3 and Sept. 8 and 10. Doby appeared in only the Aug. 2 game, as a pinch hitter. He is listed in the scorecard as a backup center fielder. For Cleveland, Lou Boudreau and Joe Gordon are in the pre-printed starting lineup.
