Original 1908 Sheet Music for “Take Me Out To the Ball Game.
Lot 458. Original 1908 Sheet Music for “Take Me Out To the Ball Game. Jack Norworth wrote the words to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” on a piece of scrap paper after passing the Polo Grounds while on a train ride to Manhattan. He had never been to a game. It took him all of 15 minutes to write the lyrics, which he then gave to Albert Von Tilzer, who composed the music to the song that is heard during the 7th inning stretch in ballparks everywhere. It is believed that only the National Anthem and Happy Birthday are played more frequently. The sheet music is complete and remains intact with significant separation along the spine, a 1 1/4” tear and some smaller tears, and a name lightly written in the upper right. Ray Dooley is pictured on the cover. He likely is one of many vaudeville performers who sang and promoted the song. Typically the performer received compensation if the song became popular. At least 20 different singers appeared on “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” sheet music. Winning Bid $92.
