Lot 265. 26 Issues of Sports Collectibles Publications Including 19 of Lew Lipset’s “The Old Judge.” Few, if any, have contributed more to the development and growth of the sports collectibles hobby than Lipset. He wrote for “The Trader Speaks,” one of the earliest influential hobby publications. He cataloged early and obscure sets, identified trends in the hobby and campaigned for fair business practices. The volumes of his “Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards” remain invaluable references. From 1985 through 1994, Lipset published “The Old Judge” newsletter – 49 issues and two supplements. Offered here are the inaugural issue and 18 more – from Feb. 1987 through Jan. 1994. The issue numbers are 9, 25, 26, 31-35 (June 1990-Feb. 1991), 39-48 (July 1991-Jan./Feb. 1993) and 50. Issue No. 39 has a phone number written on the front page, and each issue was folded twice for mailing; otherwise, they average ex to ex+. Five issues of “The Trader Speaks” are part of the collection: Nov. 1975, Jan. 1976, Aug. 1976, Dec. 1981 and Jan. 1983. The first four issues are vg-ex or vg+ to ex, and the fifth, nm. Two more recent publications are also included: “Non-Sport Update,” premier issue, Oct. 1990, ex-m, and “The Final Bid,” Issue #1, Jan. 1999, nm. “Non-Sport Update” became part of Beckett Media.
