Lot 677. 5 Carl Horner Photo Portraits from the Pages of “Baseball Magazine” - Brown, Walsh, Etc. In the early 1900s, Horner produced magnificent portraits of baseball stars and journeymen. He is responsible for the famous T206 portrait of Honus Wagner. These five photos are on pages from a 1909 issue of “Baseball Magazine.” Portraits of Hall of Famers Ed Walsh and Mordecai Brown, as are portraits of Robert Byrne and Michael Doolan. A separate page has Cincinnati’s Dick Egan, who is misidentified as Robert Eagan. Each portrait is 3.5” x 5.25” inside a decorative frame, all on a page about 6” x 9.5”. A sentence or two about the player is below the photo. The pages are vg. The photos display very well.

Lot 679. 1947 Original Wire Photo of St. Louis Browns Hopeful Jerome Witte. Dated Feb. 25, 1947, the 6” x 8” ex-m Acme photo shows Witte in spring training with the Browns in Miami. The attached caption notes that the first baseman hit 46 home runs with the minor league Toledo team the previous season. Witte made the team but failed to hit above .200 as a part-time player in two seasons. Witte played 16 seasons, until 1952, in the minors. He was the American Association MVP in 1946.

Lot 680. Mid-1950s Cleveland Indians 8” x 10” B&W Team Photo. Ex photo that shows unimprovable contract and focus. It is glued to a stiff paper backing. The presence of Al Lopez dates this photo as 1951-56. Don Mossi made his debut with the team in 1954, which narrows the range to 1954-56. After the 1955 season, Larry Doby was traded to Chicago, limiting the possibilities for this photo to 1954 and 1955.

Lot 681. Babe Ruth 11”x14” Limited Edition Silver Gelatin 1915 Boston Red Sox Image. This museum-quality photo, numbered 354, was hand-printed on acid-free paper from the original glass negative. Ruth won 18 games in 1915 for the Red Sox and batted .315 in the process. The season also included his first major league home run. The photo comes with its “Baseball Antiquities” certificate and is housed in its original book-like folder.

Lot 686. 4 Panoramic Photos of the 1909 Pittsburgh-Detroit World Series in The Index. Billed as “Pittsburgh’s Illustrated Weekly,” The Index provides World Series scenes from Pittsburgh and Detroit in its Oct. 18 issue. The front and back covers provide a 15 ¾” x 21 ½” Forbes Field crowd scene. A two-page center spread has panoramic photos of a game at Forbes Field on Oct. 8, a photo of fans leaving Forbes Field on Oct. 9 and a panoramic view of an Oct. 11 game at Detroit’s Bennett Park. The teams split the Pittsburgh games, and the Pirates won the Bennett Park game. This Series featured two greats of the game, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Wagner batted .333, and Cobb, .231. But the top players of the Series were Pittsburgh’s Tommy Leach, who batted .360 and scored eight times, and Babe Adams, who allowed only four earned runs while pitching three complete games. The front and back covers of The Index have tears and chips and grade g. Measuring 15.75” x 21.25”, the two-page spread is vg-ex with stains on the top two edges and “55” written on the right page. The interior is much better than the covers.

Lot 695. Color Photo of the 1950 Pittsburgh Pirates. This 8.75” x 11.25 photo is printed with the players’ names at the bottom. Ralph Kiner was the star of this team, which posted a 57-96 record. Vg.

Lot 698. 1959 Pittsburgh Pirates Composite Team Photo for a Department Store “Booster Club.” The defunct Horne’s store created this 8” x 10” b&w printed composite from spring training photos. It includes Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Dick Groat and Don Hoak. Three players pictured would up not making the team, - Curt Raydon, Gene Baker and Bill Hall. The 1959 team had the Pirates only winning record of the 1950s. Ex.
