Lot 361.  Late 1920s or 1930 Wire Photo of Cubs President Bill Veeck Sr. and Manager Joe McCarthy. Veeck served as president of the Chicago Cubs from 1919 until his death in 1933, and McCarthy managed the team from 1926-30. McCarthy’s success as a manager earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1957. The 6.5” x 8.5” original photo from Pacific & Atlantic Photos is vg with the lower right corner chipped. Vg.

Lot 362.  1931 Photograph of Babe Ruth and Boxers Tony Canzoneri and Kid Berg. Issued by the Elliott Service Co., this composite differs from “Illustrated Current News” issues by being an actual glossy photo. Measuring 11” x 14”, it shows Ruth leaving a Boston hospital and Tony Canzoneri knocking out Jack (Kid) Berg in the third round of their April 24, 1931 bout for the lightweight and light welterweight titles. Technically vg, displays better.

Lot 363.  Original 1937 Sepia Acme Newspictures Wire Photo of Bill Terry and Travis Jackson. In the 7” x 9” photo, Terry, the New York Giants’ manager, congratulates Jackson for being appointed manager of the Jersey City Giants. Terry and Jackson are both in the Hall of Fame as players. Terry was inducted in 1954, and Jackson, in 1982. The photo has creases in each corner. Vg to vg-ex with a clean central image area.

Lot 365.  4 Wire Photos – Ty Cobb and World Series Action from 1942 and 1942. All show players sliding into bases, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Ty Cobb is the subject of what appears to be an Associated Press wire photo trimmed to 4.75” x 5.75”. The photo appeared in an unidentified newspaper on July 19, 1961, two days after the Hall of Fame outfielders’ passing. Vg-ex with cropping and edit marks. In an Oct. 1, 1942 Acme Telephoto that measures 7” x 9”, the Cardinals’ Whitey Kurowski tags the Yankees’ Tuck Stainback for an out in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the World Series. The throw to Kurowski came from Enos Slaughter. Pitcher Johnny Beazley is in the photo, and so is umpire George Magerkurth. The Cardinals won, 4-3. Vg-ex sepia photo, caption attached. An original International News photo shows Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees tagging pinch hitter Pete Reiser of the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1947 World Series on Oct. 4. Vg+ 6” x 6.5” photo with a caption from a Spanish-language newspaper on the back. The fourth photo captures the Yankees’ Gerry Coleman attempting to turn a double play as Phil Masi of the White Sox slides below him. The 7” x 7.25” photo is dated June 17, 1950, and is from the “Cleveland Press.” The Yankees won the game at Yankee Stadium, 4-3. Vg. This group includes a Ty Cobb photo, two World Series and three Yankees photos.

Lot 366.  1956 AP Wire Photo of Baseball Star Frank Howard as a Ohio State Basketball Forward. In this 7” x 9” original photo, including caption, Howard “soars high for a rebound” in a tournament game against Manhattan. An All-American in basketball and baseball at Ohio State, Howard was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors. Instead, he chose to play baseball and batted .273 for his career, twice led the A.L. in home runs with 44, belted 382 round-trippers for his career and drove in 1,119 runs. Ex-m photo.

Lot 367.  Willie Mays Original Wire Photo and a Maury Wills Photo. The undated 7” x 9” UPI photo shows Mays being congratulated by Jim Ray Hart after scoring for the San Francisco Giants. Vg+ to ex. A 6.5” x 8” photo shows Wills, playing for the Dodgers, sliding head-first into a base. Vg+ to ex photo, apparently vintage, but with no identifying marks.

Lot 368.  1973 Associated Press Wire Photo of Dave Winfield – Basketball Star! At the University of Minnesota, the future baseball Hall of Fame player starred in basketball and baseball. His basketball coach, Bill Musselman, called him the best rebounder he ever saw. At the end of his college career, Winfield was drafted by the San Diego Padres, the Atlanta Hawks and Utah Stars. Even though he did not play college football, the Minnesota Vikings also drafted him. After a baseball career that included a .283 batting average, 465 home runs, 3,110 hits and 1,833 RBI, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. The photo, transmitted by wire, is vg-ex.

Lot 369.  Babe Ruth 11”x14” Limited Edition Silver Gelatin 1915 Boston Red Sox Image. This museum-quality photo, numbered 212, was hand-printed on acid-free paper from the original glass negative. Ruth won 18 games in 1915 for the Red Sox and batted .315 in the process. The season also included his first major league home run. The photo comes with its “Baseball Antiquities” certificate and is housed in its original book-like folder.

Lot 370.  George Brace Photos of Ruth and Gehrig and Similar Photos of DiMaggio and Others. Black & white 8” x 10” photos of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig have Brace Photo labels on the back. Three other photos have the appearance of Brace photos but are note labeled. An 8” x 10” photo shows Joe DiMaggio with brothers Vince and Dom. The other photos, each 5” x 7”, are of Bill Dickey and Mickey Cochrane. Printed relatively recently, these photos are nm.

Lot 371.  Harry Hooper (HoF) 11”x14” Limited Edition Silver Gelatin 1915 Boston Red Sox Image. This museum-quality photo, numbered 110, was hand-printed on acid-free paper from the original glass negative. With Tris Speaker and Duffy Lewis, Hooper formed one of the best outfields in baseball history. Solid as a leadoff batter and excellent on the bases, he was the best right fielder of his era because of his speed and strong arm. In fact, Babe Ruth called him “the greatest defensive right fielder.” Hooper was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971. The photo comes with its “Baseball Antiquities” certificate and is housed in its original book-like folder.
