Lot 11.  4 Different 1880s H804-1A “Baby Talk Series” Trade Cards. From a set of nine, these multi-colored cards have a white border with black framing. The cards are “Aint dot out!” f; “I’se dot dere fir’t” ex+; “I’se dot it!” p and “See me tech it!” vg. Three cards have advertising, for businesses in Farmland, IN; Newark, NJ, or Vermont. The back of the fourth is blank. All four cards have glue stains on the back, and “I’se dot it!” shows damage that does not affect the type. “See me tech it” has light pencil writing. The grades indicate the condition of the fronts.

Lot 12.  1880s H804-1C “Baby Talk Series” “Fee Stykes Out” Trade Card. The cards in this series are similar to the H804-1A cards, but they do not have black framing, and they are slightly shorter, at 3 1/8” x 4 ¼”. This example has advertising on the back for a Pittsburg(h) firm selling stoves, ranges and furnaces. Good-looking card with several minor glue-stain spots on the back. The front grades vg-ex.

Lot 13.  3 Different 1880s H804-4 Capadura Cigar Baseball Trade Cards. From a set of five, this group comprises “Behind the Bat,” vg-ex, “Judgment!” (advertiser’s name and address stamped on the front; otherwise) vg and “Where will you have them?” vg+. The last card has minor stains on the back, and the two others, moderate stains. The grades describe the fronts.

Lot 14.  9 Different 1880s H804-7 Merchant’s Gargling Oil Cards from 4 Series. All five titles are represented, and a full set is present if type variations are ignored. H804-7A is made up of players wearing a red belt, socks and hat and a white uniform against a tan background. Advertising is in a serif type. “A close Affair. Hugging the Bat” is the card from this series. Ex. H804-7B cards have multi-colored backgrounds, primarily blue and yellow. Three titles are present: “Struck Out” g, “The Hero of a Home Run” vg-ex and “Bravo!” vg. The two other series, H804-7C and H804-7D, are the same as H804-7A, except that the advertising is in a sans serif type. In one version, the type is somewhat larger and less compact. Four cards are in the group with larger type; only “Bravo!” is missing. It is present in the sans serif, more compact type version. This card has a blank, stain-free back. All of the other cards have advertising on their backs, and most have light or light-to-moderate stains. Three backs are free of stains. These five cards average vg to vg-ex.

Lot 16.  2 1880s H804-16 Forbes “Injury” Series Cards – “Assisted to His Base” and “Short Stop.” Both cards have blank backs that show minor damage. The “Assisted” card appears to have been slightly trimmed (about 1/16”) in each direction. The front of this card, without the trimming considered, grades ex-m+. The front of the “Short Stop” card is g-vg. These cards are scarce.

Lot 17.  5 Circa 1880s H804-31 “Small Card Series” Trade Cards. Only 1.75” x 3.25”, these cards are from a set of eight. They feature black & white none-sport drawings on beige or white backgrounds and have baseball-related titles. Two cards use stereotypical caricatures of black figures. The backs are blank. Vg-ex overall.

Lot 18.  2 Different 1880s H804-32 Baseball Trade Cards. These cards have black framing inside a white border and a “9” without a period in the lower right. It sometimes is confused with the H804-15A set. Titles of the two cards, from a set of nine, are “Lo, the Poor Umpire” g-vg and “Oh, What a Pudding” p. On the front and back, both cards advertise Max Stadler & Co. clothiers.

Lot 19.  1880s H804-33 Gold Medal Coffee Baseball Trade Card. All of the cards in this multi-colored set of nine are untitled. This example shows three players, two about to catch a ball. F-g with stains on the back, which contains a testimonial for the coffee by a professor of chemistry from Ohio State University.

Lot 20.  2 1880s H804-36 “W.D. Series” Trade Cards. These cards, which measure 2.5” x 5”, use the same artwork that was used on folding scorecards. From a set of four, the titles are “A High Fly” vg and “Two Out, Two Strikes & Three on Bases” ex+. The backs are blank.

Lot 21.  6 19th Century Baseball Trade Cards, All from Different Series. 1. 1889 H804-1B Tobin Litho “Tan ‘oo Tech,” Baby McKee. Back damage, g front. 2. 1887 H804-24 “Ball Series,” “Safe,” with “C-679” in the lower right. Clean blank back, vg+. 3. H804-30 “Planet Series,” “Jupiter: ‘Taking a Fly’.” Nice card with “R809” in the lower right. Clean advertising back; ex. 4. H804-31 “Small Card Series,” “A Hot Liner.” Advertising back; vg-ex. 5. H804-38, “An Accurate Barometer Series,” “Prospect of a good afternoon for Base Ball.” Moderate damage to the advertising back. G front. 6. Single card (not from a set). “Taking Things as They Come,” 1870s, Bufford, Boston, about 2.75” x 2.75”, black & white. Stains on the blank back; vg-ex front.

Lot 22.  2 1888 N135 Duke Talk of the Diamond Cards. These novelty cards feature colorful baseball artwork. “A Heavy Batter” has damage to approximately one-half of the back. The front is vg-ex. “Out” has stains on the back; all type is present and readable. F-g card with a vg front.

Lot 23.  Scarce 1889-90 N136 Duke “Terrors of American” Large Card – Out on First! This card is one of eight in the 50-card set that has a baseball theme. The full title is “Out on first! How’s that umpire?” The 2 ½” x 4 3/16” card promotes Duke’s Honest Long Cut brand. Knapp & Co. provided the lithography. The back exhibits light to moderate soiling. Vg-ex card with an ex-m front. We have two other “Terrors” cards below.
