Lot 192. Jerome Holtzman Signed Book “Fielder’s Choice.” From 1999 until his death in 2008, Holtzman was the official historian for Major League Baseball. Called “the dean of American baseball writers,” he was one of baseball’s most influential scribes. Humorist Lewis Grizzard, who worked with Holtzman at the Chicago “Sun-Times, said “No major leaguer ever got into the Hall of Fame if Holtzman didn’t want him there.” Holtzman wrote also for the “Chicago Tribune.” He is credited with creating the “save” statistic for relief pitchers. “Fielder’s Choice” is an anthology of baseball fiction edited by Holtzman. The ex-m 1980 paperback presents stories by such writers as Ring Lardner, James Thurber, Bernard Malamud, Philip Roth and Mark Harris. Holtzman signed the title page.
