Autographed Copy of “Buck Leonard: The Black Lou Gehrig.”
Lot 185. Autographed Copy of “Buck Leonard: The Black Lou Gehrig.” Leonard was the star first baseman for the Homestead Grays for more than 10 years. He was enshrined at Cooperstown in 1972. In 1999, “The Sporting News” ranked him 47th among baseball’s 100 greatest players. Only four other players who spent their entire careers in the Negro Leagues made the list. Leonard’s post-stroke signature, as “Walter ‘Buck” Leonard,” is large and bold on the first title page of his 1995 book. It shows some unsteadiness and otherwise is gem mint 10. Leonard’s signature with his first name is somewhat uncommon. He died in 1997. The stated first edition hardback is ex-m in an nm dust jacket. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $61.
