Lot 16.  1939-40 Gum Inc. “War News Pictures” Near Set of 108 Cards. Missing #109-144; #109-120 are almost impossible to find. Hitler, Stalin and Chamberlain are among the historical figures pictured in this diverse World War II set. Ex-m: 1 card. Ex+: 2. Ex: 8. Vg-ex: 44. Vg: 32. G: 10. F: 11. Lot 17.  1951 Bowman “Red Menace” Set of 48. The most recognizable card in this set, #23 Ghost City, grades ex-m. Other key cards include #1 Reds Invade South Korea vg+, 2 MacArthur Heads UN Forces vg+, 24 General “Ike” in Command vg+, 47 War-Maker (Mao) vg+ and 48 “Doughboy’s General” (Bradley) vg+. Lot 276.  1889 N226 Kinney Bros. “Naval Vessels of the World” Set of 25. This set features ships from the U.S., British, German, French, Italian and Russian navies. It averages g-vg.

Lot 277.  1908 Grollman Cartoon Postcard of the 1908 Presidential Race – Taft vs. Bryan. Titled “Start,” this unused postcard shows the two presidential candidates, William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan. Appropriately, Taft is aboard an elephant, and Bryan, a donkey. Uncle Sam is about to give the signal to start the race. Eventually, Taft won the race, with 321 electoral votes to 162 for Bryan. The card is from a set of 16 “Presidential Race – 1908” postcards produced by the Grollman company of Chicago. The set includes cards involving racing, such as this one, boxing, baseball and campaign matters. Ex.

Lot 278.  1909-12 T53 Hassan “Cowboy Series” of 49. These colorful cards have a western scene on the front and a somewhat lengthy story on the back describing the scene. An above-average example of this issue. The cards average vg+.

Lot 279.  1910-11 T113 American Tobacco “Types of Nations” Set of 50 Cards. These cards present color portraits of men in native attire from Abyssinia to Wales. This set includes various backs, such as Sub Rosa, Sweet Caporal, Recruit and two different backs that list multiple brands plus color variations. The average grade of this set is vg+ with a few cards having backs that show slight damage or writing.

Lot 281.  1926-27 W612 Interstate News Service “History Cards” Partial Set 94 of 120. Apparently issued in four series of 30 cards each, this set provides a “Pictorial History of the U.S.” Measuring 3 5/8” x 4 ¾”, the black & white cards have scenes from American history on the front and related information on the back. They cover the period from European exploration to establishment of the League of Nations. The missing cards are #2, 3, 5-10, 12, 15-30 and 50. This partial set grades vg to vg-ex overall.

Lot 282.  18 F5 Dixie Premiums, 1933-53 – Jackie Cooper, Diver Georgia Coleman, Sonja Henie, Etc. Dixie Ice Cream issued an interesting and mostly attractive array of premiums from 1933-54. These 18 premiums are all different. The 1933 and 1934 premiums were black & white with blank backs and without punch holes. In 1935, color fronts, informational black & white backs and the use of punch holes became standard. 1933: Jackie Cooper, trimmed to 8” x 10”, two punch holes added; otherwise vg+. 1934: Wheeler & Woolsey, trimmed to 8” x 10”, four punch holes added; otherwise vg+. 1936: Claudette Colbert, holes re-punched and a tear at one; otherwise vg. 1937: Freddie Bartholomew, punch holes reinforced; otherwise vg. Diving Star Georgia Coleman, who won a gold and silver medal at the 1932 Olympics, vg+. Fred MacMurray, several pin holes; otherwise vg. Robert Taylor, spiral-bound punch holes, g. 1938: Don Ameche, punch holes reinforced; otherwise vg+. Warner Baxter, punch holes reinforced; otherwise vg. Bobby Breen, g-vg. Sonja Henie, two tears in the left border; otherwise vg-ex. 1939: George O’Brien, punch holes reinforced; otherwise vg+. 1941: Helen Parrish, pin holes; otherwise vg+. 1942: All have their upper corners clipped and are without punch holes. Ray Milland p, John Payne p and Jane Withers p. 1950: Forrest Tucker, foxing on the back, clean front, g-vg. 1953: Robert Taylor, vg.

Lot 283.  10 1935 Dixie Premiums, 3 1937 and a 1941 Front Cover - Cooper, Gable, Lombard, Etc. Twenty-nine 9” x 11” premiums make up the 1935 set. In 1937, Dixie reduced the set to 24 and the size of the premiums to 8” x 10”. Each premium in the 1935 set has a yellow border on the left side and five b&w pictures on the back: Gary Cooper g, Jackie Cooper vg, Kay Francis vg, Ruby Keeler g-vg, Carole Lombard g-vg, Myrna Loy g-vg, Ken Maynard vg, Col. Tim McCoy vg-ex, Dick Powell f and Barbara Stanwyck vg-ex. The 1937 premiums have a dark green border on the left and four b&w photos on the back: Clark Gable vg-ex, Myrna Loy vg and Merle Oberon g. The Gable premium has four punch holes in the left border in addition to the two placed there by Dixie; also, tape on back. The Loy premium has two extra holes. The cover for the 1941 Dixie album, “My Scrapbook of Stars,” shows five different cartoon figures. It has a small area of paper loss in the upper right.

Lot 284.  Tom Mix 1936 F5 Dixie Premium. Few issues, sports or non-sport, are more striking than the premiums that Dixie Ice Cream produced in the mid-1930s-40s. This premium has a portrait of Mix on the front. On the back are four images from his movie “The Miracle Rider.” An excellent rider and marksman, Mix was the national Riding and Rodeo champion in 1909. Subsequently, he became the first of the western-movie superstars, appearing in more than 300 films. “The Miracle Rider” turned out to be his last movie appearance. The premium, with two punch holes as issued, grades vg-ex and looks better.

Lot 285.  1951 R701-13 Bowman “Jets, Rockets, Spacemen” Near Set – 102 of 108 Cards. One of Bowman’s most innovative and creative products, this set depicts travel and adventure in the farthest reaches of the universe. Missing #37, 38, 47, 55, 56 and 60, all from the most difficult of the three series Bowman issued. This near set grades Ex-m: 3 cards. Ex+: 3. Ex: 6. Vg-ex: 47. Vg: 20. G-vg: 4. G: 14. F: 5.

Lot 286.  1952 Bowman “U.S. Presidents” Set of 36 Cards. These cards cover the evolution of the U.S. presidency from the Revolution to President Eisenhower. Among the key cards are #1 Washington Takes Command vg, 2 the Declaration of Independence g-vg, 3 Washington vg, 5 Jefferson vg+ to ex, 19 Lincoln ex+, 28 Teddy Roosevelt vg and 34 Franklin Roosevelt g. The other cards grade Ex+: 3 cards. Ex: 1. Vg-ex: 12. Vg: 5. G-vg: 7. G: 1.

Lot 287.  1953 Bowman “Antique Autos” Set of 48 Cards. These cards cashed in on interest during the early 1950s in classic car designs and 3-D films. In producing the fronts, Bowman borrowed liberally from the 1910 T37 Turkey Red “Auto Series.” The backs have 3-D drawings and text meant to be viewed with special glasses. Very collectible example of the set grading Nm-m: 1 card. Nm+: 3. Nm: 2. Ex-m+: 7. Ex-m: 8. Ex+: 6. Ex: 4. Vg-ex: 14. Vg: 3. Almost two-thirds of the set is ex or better.

Lot 288.  1953 R701-5 Bowman “Frontier Days” Set of 128 Cards. In a larger format, these cards reproduce the artwork Bowman used in its 1950 “Wild West” set. Three cards, #95, 96 and 117, have backs in English and French; they apparently are from a Pankhurst version of the set. These classic cards grade Nm-m: 2 cards. Nm+: 4. Nm: 4. Ex-m+: 14. Ex-m: 6. Ex+: 15. Ex: 15. Vg-ex: 29. Vg: 25. G: 11. F: 2. P: 1. Almost 50% of the cards grade at least ex.
