Lot 294. Autographs of 13 Deceased Silent Screen Actresses – Gish, Joy, Mackaill, Pringle, Etc. Both PSA-DNA and Kevin Keating authenticated these signatures. Unless otherwise noted, they are nm-m 8 or better on the unlined side of index cards 3” x 5” or larger. The list comprises Ruth Clifford, Joyce Compton, Hazel Dawn, Lillian Gish, Violet Heming (personalized), Madge Kennedy (pers.), Leatrice Joy (lined card), Marion Mack, Dorothy Mackaill, Jane Novak, Aileen Pringle (lined card with a lengthy note above her signature), Esther Ralston and Dorothy Revier. Gish’s career spanned 75 years, from a leading role in “Birth of a Nation” in 1915 to “Duel in the Sun” in 1946 to a 1987 movie with Bette Davis. The American Film Institute selected her 17th among the greatest female stars of all-time. Joy was one of the leading ladies of the silent film era. Mackaill made the transition to “talkies” and in 1932, she starred with young Humphrey Bogart in “Love Affair.” Later in life, she lived in Hawaii and appeared in several episodes of “Hawaii Five-O.” Known as the “Darling of the Intelligentsia,” Pringle was friends with such figures as H. L. Mencken; artist Ralph Barton, who used her as the model for his illustrations of Dorothy for “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”; and George Gershwin. Clifford’s career included providing the voice of Minnie Mouse. Compton’s career included more than 200 movies, including “Magnificent Obsession,” “Mildred Pierce” and “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Kennedy played Aunt Martha on “Leave It to Beaver.” After the silent era, Revier appeared in a number of Buck Jones westerns.
