Lot 18. 1959 “Life” with the First 7 U.S. Astronauts – Autographed by 5. This historically important Sept. 14 issue presents the mint 9 signatures of Wally Schirra (died 2007), Alan Shepard (d. 1998), John Glenn, Gordon Cooper (d. 2004) and Deke Slayton (d. 1993). Scott Carpenter and Gus Grissom are also pictured. The seven men were the original Project Mercury astronauts. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space. The fifth astronaut in space, Schirra was the only astronaut to participate in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. Cooper flew the longest Mercury flight. A World War II pilot, Slayton was the docking module pilot of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. The third American in space, Glenn was the first to orbit the Earth. In 1998, at the age of 77, the former U.S. Senator became the oldest person to go into space. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating. The cover is vg+. Lot 19. Judy Resnik Official NASA 8”x10” Color Photo Beautifully Signed and Inscribed. Sadly, Resnik is best remembered as one of the seven crew members who perished when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after take-off on Jan. 28, 1986. She was the first American Jewish astronaut to go into space, the first Jewish woman, the second U.S. woman and only the second Jew. Her autographs are seldom seen and widely coveted, particularly on official photos. Her signature, inscribed to “Michael,” is mint 9. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. M
