Lot 244. Scarce Autograph of Cyrus W. Field – Laid the First Transatlantic Telegraph Cable. Born in Massachusetts in 1819, Field established a paper manufacturing business in New York. Telegraphy soon captured his interest, and with other entrepreneurs, including Samuel F. B. Morse, he created the Atlantic Telegraph Company. In 1858, the company finished laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable, which ran from Newfoundland to Ireland. He died in 1892. His autograph is bold, mint 9 to gem mint 10, on a slightly irregular 4.5” x 5” section of paper. Below his signature, he added “New York.” Kevin Keating authenticated the signature of this important financier and communications pioneer.
