Lot 243. Hindenburg Disaster Photo Autographed by 5 Zeppelin Crew Members. On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg, LZ129, caught fire and crashed while attempting to dock at the Lakehurst, NJ, Naval Air Station. Thirty-five of the 97 passengers and crew on board were killed. Three crew members who survived the accident signed the 8” x 10” b&w photo: Eugen Bentele, chief mechanic for one of the engines; Alfred Grozinger, a cook, and Al Stoffler, the pastry chef. The photo is signed also by two crew members of other airships, Norbert Heiss, who served on LOZ127, and George Holl, a member of the LZ127 and LZ129 crews. LZ127 was in service from 1928 until it was retired in 1937. The airship completed a “round-the-world” flight supported by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1929. Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures, which are mint 9 and gem mint 10. The three LZ129 signers are deceased.
