Baseball Books   4 Lots

Lot 98.  First Edition of “Eight Men Out” by Eliot Asinof. Hardback stated first edition of the classic 1963 history of the 1919 World Series and the Black Sox scandal. Ex copy with an owner’s label inside the front cover and several inside pages stained by a “New York Times” article on the subsequent move. Vg+ to ex price-clipped dust jacket.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 99.  Zane Grey’s 3 Early 1900s Books on Baseball. Widely recognized for his western novels, Grey attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship and subsequently played in the minor leagues. His baseball experiences inspired two novels and a collection of short stories. His novel “The Short-Stop” was published in 1909, followed by “The Young Pitcher” in 1911 and “The Redheaded Outfield and Other Baseball Stories” in 1915. Our consignor spent years collecting all three books, which are rarely offered together. All are vg or vg-ex hardbacks. “The Short-Stop” is the 1914 fourth printing; “The Young Pitcher,” an apparent first edition; and “The Redheaded Outfield,” a 1948 edition in a vg dust jacket that has tape reinforcement on the blank side. The bulk of the dust jacket from the 1940s edition accompanies the 1911 edition of “The Young Pitcher.”
Winning Bid $45.

Lot 100.  First Edition of A. G. Spalding’s “American’s National Game.” Possibly the most important early baseball history, this 542-page 1911 hardback has blue covers with gilt lettering and an illustration. Spalding was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. In the 1870s, he played for the Boston Red Stockings and Chicago White Stockings and managed the Chicago team. He co-founded the Spalding sporting goods company. His photo is inside the book, which is illustrated with photos, and cartoons by Homer C. Davenport. The covers are detached from the interior. Pages at the front and back are partially separated from the rest.
Winning Bid $75.

Spalding was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. In the 1870s, he played for the Boston Red Stockings and Chicago White Stockings and managed the Chicago team.
