Team and Group-Signed Baseballs and Bats   9 Lots

Lot 21.  Rare 1929 New York Yankees Team Baseball Autographed by 26. The signatures are on an ex-m to nm Official American League E. S. Barnard baseball that is off-white with strong pre-printed areas. The Babe Ruth autograph on the sweet spot is a clubhouse example. Kevin Keating has authenticated the other signatures. They include Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, Floyd Van Pelt, (Gordon) Dusty Rhodes, George Pipgras and Fred Heimach on the south panel, Bob Meusel, Lyn Lary, Tony Lazzeri, Tom Zachary, Johnny Grabowski, Charley O’Leary and Benny Bengough on the north, Bob Shawkey, Sammy Byrd, Gene Robertson and Earle Combs on the east, and Ben Paschal, Herb Pennock, Waite Hoyt, Cedric Durst, Julian Wera and Roy Sherid on the west. The autographs generally are light, ranging from poor-fair 1 to ex 5. For approximately one-half of the signatures, all letters can be deciphered with the naked eye (ex). The Gehrig signature rates very good 3; while light, half of the letters can readily be deciphered. The ball is dated 9-19-29. Examples from this year seldom turn up. The 1929 team was among the first to wear uniform numbers. One of the oddities is the presence of Van Pelt on the ball. Records show that he was assigned uniform No. 35, although he never got into a Yankees game. Here is a rare opportunity to own a rare memento from the 29th season of baseball’s most storied franchises. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $1,129.

Lot 368.  Baseball Autographed by Connie Mack, Joe Louis, 1942 Athletics and Others. A coat of shellac covers the surface of this unofficial, sepia-toned ball that shows a nice Mack signature with one other on the sweet spot. Joe Louis displays decently on a panel with many other signers, some difficult to make out; some may not be baseball players. Earl Brucker, Ken Richardson Peter Suder, Earl Mack, Mike Kreevich and Felix Mackiewicz, all on the 1942 Athletics team, are on one panel. These signatures and Mack’s grade ex-m 6 to nm 7. Other signatures of varying strengths are by Al Rubeling, Jim Catigilia, Dee Miles, Dave Keefe and Buddy Blair. Interesting ball with a very displayable example of Connie Mack’s signature, along with Louis and various members of the 1942 Athletics team. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $218.

Lot 369.  1947 Philadelphia Athletics Team Ball SS-Signed by Simmons and Mack. Hall of Fame members Al Simmons and Connie Mack share the sweet spot of this nm cream-colored OAL Harridge ball, which has strong pre-printed areas and shows no sign of discoloration. In addition to Simmons and Mack, 21 black-ink signatures include those of Eddie Joost, Hank Majeski, Sam Chapman, Elmer Valo, Russ Christopher and Phil Marchildon on the north panel, Bill Dietrich and Barney McCosky on the west, Earle Brucker, George Binks, Ferris Fain, Bill McCahan and Fermin Guerra on the east and Dave Keefe, Pete Suder, Carl Scheib, Jesse Flores, Buddy Rosar, and Dick Fowler on the south. The autographs are easily discernable and range from ex 5 to nm 7. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. A uniformly applied and barely visible Krylon veil preserves these autographs and your investment!
Winning Bid $396.

Lot 370.  Bill McKechnie (HoF) Signed Baseball with 15 Other 1952 Boston Red Sox. Baseballs autographed by the Hall of Fame manager are extremely difficult to find, and his signature is seldom as strong in this one. In crisp, bold blue ink, “W. B. McKechnie” extends across the sweet spot of a clean, cream-colored unofficial ball that shows neither stampings nor discoloration. A virtually imperceptible Krylon coat protects McKechnie’s signature and the others. McKechnie managed Pittsburgh and Cincinnati to World Championships and also led St. Louis and the Reds to N.L. pennants. He died in 1965, three years after his induction into the Hall of Fame. The ball presents mint 9 or gem mint 10 signatures also by Bill Goodman, Al Benton, Ellis Kinder, Ivan Delock, Mel Parnell, Del Wilber, Ralph Brickner, Mickey McDermott, George Schmees, Gus Niarhos, Johnny Lipon, Willard Nixon, Clyde Vollmer, Ted Lepcio, and Dick Brodowski. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Tremendous ball with a gorgeous McKechnie autograph.
Winning Bid $222.

Lot 371.  1957 Dodgers Team Ball Signed by 25 - the LAST Brooklyn Team! The stars are present on this cream-colored nm ball. The strength of their signatures varies. Walt Alston occupies the sweet spot. The east panel has Gil Hodges, John Roseboro and Bob Kennedy; the west, Sandy Amoros, Sal Maglie, Carl Erskine, Don Bessent and Roy Campanella; the south, Carl Furillo, Don Drysdale, Roger Craig, Johnny Podres, Jim Gilliam and Ed Roebuck, and the north, Elmer Valo, Rube Walker, Charlie Neal, Sandy Koufax (very faint), and one too faint to read. The ball has five clubhouse signatures: Reese, Snider, Labine, Cimoli, and Newcombe. Signatures vary in quality. Stronger signatures are by Alston, Podres, Gilliam, Valo and Erskine; they generally are nm 7. Most of the others range from vg 3 to ex 5, with some less, including Koufax. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. An imperfect example of this widely collected team, it boasts several Hall of Famers, including a pre-accident Campanella (g-vg) signed during his very last season!
Winning Bid $264.

Lot 372.  OAL Baseball Signed by 22 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers – Kaline, Mathews, Etc. These Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, 4 games to 3. They autographed an OAL Bobby Brown ball at a reunion. Al Kaline is on the sweet spot; Willie Horton, Jon Warden, Wayne Comer, Daryl Patterson, Gates Brown and Eddie Mathews are on the north panel; Norm Cash, Don Wert, John Sain, John Hiller and Earl Wilson on the south; Pat Dobson, Dick Tracewski, Jim Price, Jim Northrup and Dick McAuliffe on the east, and Hal Naragon, Mickey Stanley, Fred Lasher, Tom Matchik and Mickey Lolich on the west. A couple of signatures are nm-m 8; the others are mint 9 to gem mint 10. The ball is white with fully intact pre-printed areas; each side panel has a small area of discoloration. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $291.

Lot 373.  Cal Ripken Jr. Autograph on a 1981 Rochester Red Wings Team-Signed Baseball. RIPKEN SPENT ONLY THE 1981 SEASON IN THE MINOR LEAGUES. AS A RESULT, EXAMPLES OF HIS SIGNATURE IN A MINOR LEAGUE CONTEXT ARE SCARCE. The autographs of Ripken and 15 other Red Wings are on an ex-m “Compliments of Kodak” ball given to a fan on Kodak Night on May 30, 1981. The Red Wings served as Baltimore’s AAA farm team in the International League. In addition to having Riken’s autograph, the ball is of interest because it is signed by 11 players, including Ripken, who participated in THE LONGEST GAME IN PRO BASEBALL HISTORY. The 33-inning game with Rochester at Pawtucket began on April 18, 1981, extended into April 19 and was concluded on June 23. Ripken signed the ball at the top of the east panel. His autograph is bold, a 9-10. He shares the panel with Tom Eaton, Jeff Schneider and another player. There are a couple of tiny brown lines on or next to the “R” in Ripken. Elsewhere, the ball is signed by manager Doc Edward on the sweet spot, Dave Huppert, Floyd Rayford, Dan Logan and (Kevin) Kennedy (traced over) on the west panel, local broadcaster Jeff Howlett, who threw out the first pitch, and John Valle on the north, and Mike Hart, Steve Grilli (losing pitcher in the marathon game), Mike Boddicker, Jim Umbarger and Bobby Bonner on the south. Bonner and Schneider share Ripken’s 1982 Topps rookie card with him. Ripken batted .288 and contributed 23 home runs and led the team in RBI with 75. The ball is accompanied by a 12 ½” x 8 ½” team picture and a plastic cup that has the line score for the marathon game with Pawtucket. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 374.  11 Woman’s “League of Their Own” Autographs on an OAL Bobby Brown Baseball. The players added varied notations: Dottie Kamenshek, “Rockford Peaches 1943-51, 53, HOF 11-88.” Dorothy Snookie Harrell, “Doyle Rockford Peaches SS 1944-52 HOF 11-88.” Faye Dancer, “Peoria Red Wings 44-50 11-5-88 HOF.” “Nickie” Fox, “Rockford Peaches 1943-1952 HOF 11-5-88.” Marge Wenzell, “South Bend Blue Sox 1945-1953 HOF 11-88.” Annabelle Lefty Lee, “Peoria Redwings 1944-1950 HOF 11-5-88.” Gina Casey, “Kenosha.” Pepper Paire Davis, “Racine Belles.” Alice Fracase, “Chicago Colleens.” Robin Knight, “’Beans’ in a League of Their Own.” And Pauline Crawley, “Peoria Redwings 1946/1951.” Seven signatures are mint 9 or gem mint 10. The others range from vg-ex to ex-m. A nice collection of some great players from this long defunct professional league! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $248.
