Lot 274. Scarce Autograph of Doc Carlson, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach. An M.D., Henry Clifford Carlson was a member of the inaugural class of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959 and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was recognized for his success at the University of Pittsburgh, where his basketball teams posted a 367-247 record from 1922-53 and won national championships in 1928 and 1930. They also advanced to the Final Four in 1941 and captured the Eastern Intercollegiate Conference Championship from 1933-35 and in 1937. As a Pitt student 1914-18, Carlson earned three letters in basketball, two in baseball and four in football. He played on the Panthers’ national championship football team in 1916 and received first-team All-American honors in 1917. Carlson’s signature, as “H. C. Carlson,” is a 10 on a 1962 typed letter on Pitt stationery to Chet Smith, “Pittsburgh Press” sports editor. Carlson died in 1964. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
