Lot 194.  Rare Photo of 1934 Chicago Cubs Wearing and Promoting Herbert Panama Hats. The photo includes four Hall of Fame members, Mike Kelly, a coach; Chuck Klein, Gabby Hartnett and Kiki Cuyler. Some other good players are in the photo too, Woody English, Riggs Stephenson, Lon Warneke, Charlie Root and Babe Herman. The 8” x 10” b&w photo is matted and in a vintage 12.5” x 14.5” wood frame that has a wood backing. The photo has one crease in the upper right corner, and another in the lower left. Focus and contrast are sharp. A few photos of individual players have surfaced. This is the first group photo we have seen for Herbert’s.

Lot 327.  Bruce Murray Sr. C. 1930 “Legends of Summer” B&W Photo – Gehrig, Foxx and Ruth. Murray was one of the most highly regarded photographers of the first half of the 20th century. Working for the “The Pubic Ledger” of Philadelphia and, later, the “Evening Bulletin,” he photographed a wide range of subjects, including sports figures. He retired in 1958 and passed away in 1969, Today, his photos are in the permanent collections of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Thomas Edison Museum, the Babe Ruth Museum, the Franklin Institute, the International Boxing Hall of Fame and other institutions. They also are in many private collections, including those of Reggie Jackson, Tom Hanks, Larry King and Gary Sinise. This 11” x 14” silver gelatin photo (10” x 12.75” image area) shows three of baseball’s greatest players - Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and Babe Ruth, apparently at Shibe Park. It is embossed with “The Bruce Murray Collection.” Mint, the photo is matted in gray and framed in black to 17.75” x 21.75”. It was hand-printed directly from the original 4” x 5” negative. Numbered 801, it comes with a Murray Collection Certificate of Authenticity. It is a wonderful museum-quality image!

Lot 328.  “Polo Grounds Nocturne” Lithograph by William Feldman. In this 1988 print, Feldman provides a 1950s panoramic view of the home of the New York Giants. A game is in progress under the lights. The lithograph has a 25.75” x 18” image area. Mint and signed by Feldman, it is framed in silver-colored aluminum, without matting, to 19.75” x 21.75”.

Lot 329.  Ken Griffey Jr. ’53 Lithograph by James Fiorentino. Early last season, Griffey called it a Hall of Fame career with 2,780 hits, 630 untainted home runs, 1,836 RBI and a .284 career batting average. Among his career honors are selection to 13 All-Star squads, including 11 straight, the 1997 A.L. MVP Award, 10 Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger awards. He ranks fifth on the all-time MLB home run list and 15th on the RBI list. Griffey’s portrait appears in artwork based on Topps’ 1953 cards. From a 1999 Bill Goff series, the 18” x 25” print is signed by Fiorentino and numbered 119 of 600. Carefully rolled, it is nm-m to mint.

Lot 330.  Derek Jeter ’53 Lithograph by James Fiorentino. From a 1999 Bill Goff series, this 18” x 25” print features artwork in the style of Topps’ 1953 cards. Jeter’s distinguished career includes a .314 career batting average, almost 3,000 hits, 1996 A.L. Rookie of the Year honors, 11 All-Star selections through 16 seasons, five Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger awards. The print is signed by the artist and numbered 119 of 600. Carefully rolled, it is nm-m to mint.

Lot 332.  Roger Clemens ’53 Lithograph by Bill Purdom. Nm-m to mint carefully rolled 18” x 15” print produced from artwork done in the style used for 1953 Topps baseball cards. Signed by Purdom, the print is #119 of 600. Clemens ranks ninth in career MLB victories with 354.

Lot 333.  Nomar Garciaparra ’53 Lithograph by Bill Purdom. The artist autographed the print, numbered 119 of 600 and is part of a 1999 Bill Goff series. Purdom’s portrait of the star shortstop is done in the style of Topps’ 1953 baseball cards. Carefully rolled, the 18” x 25” print is nm-m to mint. The 1997 Rookie of the Year, Garciaparra put up Hall of Fame numbers before being slowed with injuries. A six-time All-Star, he batted .313 for his career with 229 home runs and 936 RBI. In 2005, he saved the lives to two women who had fallen into Boston Harbor near his home.

Lot 334.  Mike Piazza ’53 Lithograph by James Fiorentino. Possibly the best-hitting catcher in baseball history, Piazza hit more home runs than any other catcher, 396. He belted 31 homers at other positions, for a total of 427. The 1993 Rookie of the Year, he batted .308 for his career, was a 12-time All-Star and earned 10 Silver Slugger awards. Piazza’s portrait, in the style of Topps’ 1953 baseball cards, is signed by the artist and numbered 119 of 600. It is 18” x 25”, carefully rolled and nm-m to mint.

Lot 335.  Mark McGwire ’53 Lithograph by Bill Purdom. The artist’s portrait of McGwire is presented in the same format used by Topps for its 1953 baseball cards. Numbered 119 of 600, the 18” x 25” print is rolled and nm-m to mint. It is part of a 1999 series by Bill Goff. McGwire set a record for home runs in a season with 70 in 1998. He ranks 10th on the career home run list with 583.

Lot 336.  Sammy Sosa ’53 Lithograph by Bill Purdom. From a Bill Goff 1999 series with portraits based on Topps’ 1993 baseball cards, the 18” x 25” print is signed by Purdom, numbered 119 of 600 and grades nm-m to mint. It is rolled. Sosa is seventh on the career home run list with 609. He was an All-Star seven times.

Lot 338.  Roberto Clemente Limited Edition Lithograph - #21 of 500 – by Dick Perez. This lithograph features the artwork Perez created for the Clemente puzzle inserted with the 1987 Donruss baseball card set. It is enclosed in a 20” x 26” metal frame. Our consignor requested and received print #21, for Clemente’s uniform number, from the Perez-Steele Galleries. Perez signed the lithograph. Mint.

Lot 346.  Babe Ruth Original May 24, 1935 Photo at Forbes Field. This apparent press photo is dated May 24, 1935 on the back. It shows Ruth looking skyward after connecting with a pitch. Playing for the Boston Braves, Ruth went one-for-four against the Pittsburgh Pirates to improve his average to .153. The next day, he had one of the best days of his career, connecting for three home runs and a single in four at bats and driving in six runs. In another five days, he played his final game. The sepia 7” x 9” vintage, original photo has a 1” tear in the upper right, a couple of heavy creases and a stain below Ruth’s left elbow. It presents a fine image of the Bambino in the final days of his legendary career.

Lot 347.  Lou Gehrig in 3 Type 1 1930s Wire Photos and a Newspaper Photo. The earliest photo, dated June 22, 1933, pictures Gehrig in uniform at White Sox Park next to his fiancé, Eleanore Twitchell. They married in September. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” sepia photo from International News Photos has pinholes in the upper corners and in the bottom border; otherwise, it is vg-ex. A brief caption is attached. Another 6 ½” x 8 ½” International News photo shows Gehrig from the waist up; vg+ and stamped “Jun 28 1939” on the back. An original 8” x 9 ¾” newspaper photo captures Gehrig in the Yankees’ dugout. Vg and dated April 29, 1938. An original, undated AP wire photo, apparently from early 1939, shows Gehrig in a suit as the Yankees traveled while playing exhibition games in Texas. The caption below the photo mentions Gehrig’s decline. It optimistically reports that “Gehrig slugged the baseball far and wide and played his first sack as of old to offset experts’ reports he was slipping badly.” Ex 7 ¾” x 10” photo. Extremely nice displayable collection of Gehrig original photos.

Lot 351.  Ebbets Field “A Field in Flatbush” Print and Brick. Built in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn and opened in 1913, Ebbets Field served as home to the Dodgers until 1957. The ball park was demolished in 1960 to make way for an apartment building. From a painting by Bill Levers, the 25” x 23” lithograph presents a 22.75” x 17” image of the Ebbets Field exterior in the 1950s. Below the image is a section of brick removed from the rotunda area during demolition. It is attached to the glass of the 25.5” x 23.5” frame. Text to the left and right says “An Authentic Piece of Baseball History.” In pencil, the title of the lithograph is written above. The print is numbered 1512 of 1957 at the left, and Levers signed it in pencil at the right. Kevin Keating authenticated Levers’ autograph.
