1898 Cigar Box Lid with N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter Champions – Ewing, Cody, Etc.
Lot 184. 1898 Cigar Box Lid with N28 and N29 Allen & Ginter Champions – Ewing, Cody, Etc. The lid is from a box of Big Run cigars, an American Tobacco Co. brand. By 1890, John Buchanan Duke absorbed his major competitors, including Allen & Ginter, and formed American Tobacco. The artwork Allen & Ginter used for its famous 1888 World’s Champions cards were now the property of the new company. American Tobacco displayed six champions and other artwork on the inside of the cigar box lid: baseball player Buck Ewing, rifle shooter Buffalo Bill Cody, runner L. E. Myers, cyclist Percy Stone, billiards player J. Schaefer and pedestrian James Albert. The lid outside has the Big Run name, a tax stamp and a stain. The inside, with the artwork, has a stain immediately left of center at the top. Measuring 8” x 4.75”, it displays very nicely and will make an excellent complement to a 19th century or Allen & Ginter collection.
Winning Bid $390.
