Red Barber Autograph on a Handwritten 1983 Letter.
Lot 131. Red Barber Autograph on a Handwritten 1983 Letter. “The Ol’ Redhead” broadcast baseball games from 1934-66, first for Cincinnati, then Brooklyn and finally the Yankees. His was the first play-by-play voice on a televised MLB game. In 1973, he and Mel Allen received the inaugural Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame. After being forced out by the Yankees, Barber retired and contributed to National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” program. He and host Bob Edwards would discuss sports and other topics. After Barber’s passing in 1992, Edwards wrote about his 12-year on-air relationship with Barber. In 1983, Barber responded on his own stationery to a note from Ron Gabriel, president of the Brooklyn Dodger Fan Club. In his own hand, Barber wrote that he had “a very happy, wonderful birthday – I’m grateful for friends, family, work and health.” His signature and his writing are gem mint 10. Three items accompany the letter: 1. An envelope addressed by Barber. 2. A copy of Edwards’ book,” Fridays with Red: a Radio Friendship.” The book and dust jacket are near mint. 3. A CD with Barber’s voice, “Red Barber, Play-by-Play Pioneer.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $92.
