1947 Original Wire Photo of St. Louis Browns First Baseman Jerry Witte.
Lot 231. 1947 Original Wire Photo of St. Louis Browns First Baseman Jerry Witte. Ex-m 6” x 8” photo with a March 25 caption speculating that Witte could be the Browns “regular first baseman when the season opens.” Witte’s 46 home runs in 1946 with Toledo fueled the speculation. On Opening Day 1947, Witte was at first base for St. Louis, and he batted fifth in the lineup. Unfortunately, he could not come close to duplicating in the majors what he had achieved in the minors. By mid-season, his major league adventure was over – with four home runs and a .213 career average. He journeyed through the minor for another six seasons and retired with 308 minor league home runs.
Winning Bid $15.
