Lot 222.  1990 Bowman Lithograph of Nolan Ryan. In 1989, Bowman commissioned Craig Pursley to create paintings of 11 baseball stars, including Ryan, Don Mattingly and Bret Saberhagen. The company used the artwork to produce sweepstakes cards that it inserted into 1990 packs. It also produced 500 lithographs of each painting. A total of 250 sets were given away in the sweepstakes. The remaining 250 sets were offered to hobby dealers, who retailed them for $400-450. Offered here is the Ryan lithograph, the premier litho in the set. Numbered 236 of 500 and designated a “Hobby Sample,” it is signed by Pursely. The lithograph has 6” x 8.5” image printed on 11” x 14” stock. It is double-matted and framed to 12.5” x 16”. Nm-m. An outstanding and limited Ryan collectible!

Lot 223.  1990 Bowman Lithograph of Bret Saberhagen. In two seasons, Saberhagen won the A.L. Cy Young Award, and in three, he was an All-Star. He is featured in 6” x 8.5” image by Craig Pursley on 11” x 14 stock. At Topps’ direction, Pursely painted images of 11 baseball stars. Topps made two uses of the paintings. It manufactured sweepstakes cards that it inserted into 1990 Bowman packs. It also created 500 lithographs based on each painting. It gave away 250 sets of the 11 lithographs in its sweepstakes. It sold the other 250 to hobby dealers, who offered them for $400-450 per set. Pursley signed the Saberhagen lithograph, labeled a “Hobby Sample” and numbered 236 of 500. The paper stock has some edge creases and tears. The image area itself is mint. Limited, attractive Saberhagen and Royals collectible well worth our low

Lot 224.  New York Mets 3.5” Pin, Munson Pin and 23 Team Logo Pins. “Mets” is displayed against a silhouette of New York with baseball stitches. Nm-m. The 3” Thurman Munson pin is #4 from the 1978 Sports Photo Assoc. issue. Nm-m. Teams represented on the 1.75” logo pins are, from the American League, the A’s, Angels, Blue Jays, Brewers, Mariners, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, Tigers, Twins, White Sox and Yankees and, from the National League, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Expos, Giants, Mets, Padres, Phillies and Reds. Nm.

Lot 225.  12 Baltimore Orioles World Series, League Championship, Player and Other Pins. Six pins are associated with the World Series, two from 1979 and four from 1983. All are 3.5” in diameter. A pin dated 1979 recognizes the Orioles as the Eastern Division Champion, and a similar undated pin, as the American League Champions. Both pictures the Orioles’ mascot. The Division pin exhibits light foxing, and heavier foxing around the rim. Fox 1983, one pin encourages the Orioles to “Beat the Sox” in the ALCS. They did and became American League Champions, an achievement memorialized in a “World Series 1983” pin. Two pins honor Baltimore as the World Champions, one with a team photo and the other with the mascot. These pins are nm. Two mascot pins say “Baltimore Orioles” on the rim; one is 3” in diameter, and the other, 1.75”. Four 3” color pins picture Orioles players: Storm Davis, Mike Flanagan, Fred Lynn and Cal Ripken Jr. Ex-m to nm.

Lot 226.  1969 “Play Ball” Metal Lunch Box from the King-Seeley Thermos Co. The teams represented on the main panel appear to be the Yankees and possibly the Red Sox. Vg box with wear and rust on the edges. Inside, owners’ names are present, and the thermos is missing.

Lot 227.  60+ Baseball Advertisements, Images and Articles. All are from magazines or newspapers. Among the more interesting offerings is a March 13, 1989 “New York Times” article headlined “‘New’ Ken Griffey Is on Rise.” The article has a photo of Griffey Sr. and 19-year-old Jr. For vintage collectors, this group includes an 1890 book plate 6” x 8” print of Frank Otis Small’s “A Stolen Base,” four pages on baseball from the 1909 “Werner Encyclopedia” and a 1932 Barbasol ad with a baseball theme. Subjects of 22 ads, which range from 2.5” x 6.5” to a “Life” magazine-sized double-page spread, are Nellie Fox (2), Whitey Ford, Ken Boyer (2), Ron Santo (2), Pete Rose (2), Stan Musial, Eddie Mathews, Sal Maglie, Phil Rizzuto and Ted Williams (2). Two ads feature figures from various sports. One has Mickey Mantle, Doak Walker, Bob Cousy, Joe Louis and Carmen Basilio, and another, Bob Feller, Bart Starr, Oscar Robertson and Bob Mathias. All of the ads are different. This collection also includes: New York “Daily News” Big Baseball Cards: Dave Winfield (2), Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph. Photos, various sizes, Roger Maris, Casey Stengel (2 different), Lou Gehrig, Fernando Valenzuela, Pee Wee Reese, Ron Swoboda, Joey Jay, Robin Roberts, Hoyt Wilhelm, Thurman Munson and Billy Williams. Magazine covers: Harmon Killebrew, Vida Blue, Willie Mays (2 diff.), Mickey Mantle, Sparky Lyle, Rod Carew, Charlie Keller and Jerry Koosman. Articles: Mickey Mantle, Luke Appling, Dennis Eckersley, Rocky Colavito, Mel Ott and Sam Jones. Obituaries: Carl Furillo (2 diff.), Lefty Gomez and Bill Terry. The magazine covers average vg; the other items average ex.
