Lot 8. Magnificent, Scarce 1992 “The Doolittle Tokyo Raiders” Robert Taylor Print Signed by 14. (Jimmy) J. H. Doolittle himself heads the list of World War II heroes who autographed this stunning lithograph featuring Robert Taylor artwork. Taylor portrays Doolittle’s B-25 Mitchell bomber after its departure from the USS “Hornet.” Doolittle is airborne to lead a unit of B-25s on a daring aerial assault on Tokyo and other Japanese cities as the U.S. responds to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Besides Doolittle, the lithograph is autographed by navigator Hank Potter, pilot Davy Jones, bombardier Jacob DeShazer, pilot of the No. 2 aircraft Travis Hoover, navigator and bombardier H A Sessler, co-pilot J. R. Stork, co-pilot R E Cole, co-pilot Griff Williams, navigator Tom Griffin, co-pilot R A Knobloch, co-pilot Bob Emmens, pilot Bill Bower and pilot E W Holstrom. The autographs are 9s and 10. Taylor also signed. Doolittle, who passed away a year after the lithograph was issued, received the Medal of Honor for planning and leading the raid on Japan. Later, he served with distinction while commanding air forces in Italy and North Africa and eventually the Eighth Air Force in Europe. The lithograph, #103 of 1000, measures 37 ¾” x 27 ¼” with an image and signature area 33 ¾” x 22 ¾”. The print has been lightly rolled and has a couple of inoffensive creases outside the image area. Scarce and desirable print. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating.
