Lot 248.  22 Sheets of U.S. Postal Service Stamps, 1945-2007, Most with a Military or Space Theme. These sheets average nm and have a face value of $139.66. Besides the USPS stamps, there is a sheet of 30 stamps designed by the Postal Service, but never issued. The stamps commemorate the 50th anniversary of the use of atomic bombs against Japan to end World War II. After the Japanese government protested, the U.S. dropped plans to issue the stamps. Mid Coast Marketing of Columbus, OH, issued the stamps in 1995 without a denomination. Four sheets of 50 3-cent stamps were produced in 1945-46 to honor the Armed Forces. The subjects are Iwo Jima, the Coast Guard, the Army and the Navy. The other stamps are: 1953 General Patton, 50 3-cent; the sheet has a corner chip. 1983 Medal of Honor, 40 20-cent. 1992 Space Accomplishments, 50 29-cent. 1993 National Postal Museum, 20 29-cent. 1996 Classic American Aircraft, 20 32-cent. 1998 Space Discovery, 20 32-cent. 1999 Distinguished Soldiers, 20 33-cent. 1999 Billy Mitchell, 20 55-cent. 2000 Honoring Veterans, 20 34-cent. 2001 U.S. Military Academy, 20 34-cent. The following are 37-cent stamps in sheets of 20: 2003 Purple Heart, 2003 National World War II Memorial, 2004 American Advances in Aviation and 2004 Distinguished Marines. The final three sheets have 41-cent stamps: 2006 The Settlement of Jamestown (20 stamps), 2006 The Art of Disney Magic (20) and 2007 Star Wars (15), two sheets. There also is a block of four 2004 Disney stamps.

Lot 249.  74 First-Day Covers Dealing with World War II and Space Exploration. Most of the covers deal with WWII. In 1994, Mercury of England issued five FDCs to mark the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Each contains a coin, including two one-crown coins and two two-pound coins. Winston Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery are among the subjects pictured. Five more D-Day FDCs from Colorano of England commemorate the 40th anniversary of D-Day and feature “silk” cachets of Gen. Eisenhower, Montgomery, Churchill, De Gaulle and President Roosevelt. Four more British FDCs from 1998 focus on the 1944 Battle of Arnhem. Artmaster of Louisville created 36 of the FDS mark WWII events spanning 1941-45. Ten FDCs are from 1991, nine from 1992, 10 from 1994 and seven from 1995. Subjects include Pearl Harbor, food rationing, the Battle of Coral Sea and Iwo Jima. Ten1993 envelopes Artcraft, all the same, are titled “Commemorating World War II, 1943. Turning the Tide, Allies Invade Sicily and Italy.” Each envelope has a different WWII-related 32-cent stamp. Ten miscellaneous FDCs feature Gen. Omar Bradley, Gen. Claire Chennault, the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Marines, U.S. forces retaking New Guinea, the National World War II Memorial and Eddie Rickenbacker and Billy Mitchell. A 1994 French FDC observes D-Day. In addition, there are three space-related FDCs: 1992 Theodore von Marman, from Fleetwood in 1992, the Manned Lunar Landing and the Space Shuttle “Columbia.” These envelopes average nm.

Lot 250.  Collection of 23 Books, Magazines and Newspapers on WWII, 9/11 and Other Events. Time magazine produced three softcover books marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day (2004), V-E Day and V-J Day (both 2005). Each contains at least 122 pages and is nm-m. Time’s sister publication, Life, in cooperation with the History Channel, also commemorated the 60th anniversary of D-Day with a special 2004 issue. Nm-m+. D-Day is also the subject of a special 2004 edition from WWII History, vg. There are five hardcover books and one softcover: Flying Aces: Aviation Are of World War II, James H. Kitchens, 1999, ex-m/ex. Air Command: Fighters and Bombers of World War II, Jeffry L. Ethell, 1997, ex-m+/ex-m. Jane’s Fighting Aircraft of World War II, 2001 by Random House, nm/vg. Our Call to Arms: The Attack on Pearl Harbor, 2001 from Life, nm-m/nm. Remember D-Day, Ronald J. Drez, 2004, nm-m/ex. USS Enterprise (CV-6): The Most Decorated Ship of World War II, Steve Ewing, 1998 softcover, ex. Three publications center on 9/11: the Sept. 24, 2001 and Sept. 11, 2002 issues of Time and a publication titled September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed America, 2001 from AMI Specials. Nm. Also, the Sept. 21, 1998 issue of Time focusing on President Clinton and the Starr Report, the April 11, 2005 issue of Newsweek on the life of Pope John Paul II and a D-Day and Battle of Normandy battlefield map. Nm. Seven issues of The Stuart (FL) News spanning Nov. 8, 2000 through March 20, 2003 cover the election of George H. W. Bush (first section only), the “Dawn of a new millennium,” the 9/11 attack (Sept. 12 edition) and the aftermath, and the onset of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Ex-m. The newspapers are complete unless otherwise noted.

Lot 251.  100 Aviation and World War II Periodicals Including a “Gathering of Eagles” Book. The Gathering of Eagles program focuses on the study of aviation history and the contributions of aviation pioneers. Each year, the U.S. Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) commissions artwork that honors and is signed by Medal of Honor recipients, fighter aces and aviation innovators. A high-quality color softcover book describes the artwork and includes a portrait of each aviator and biographical information. The 40-page 1985 book, offered here, includes such aviators as Pappy Boyington, Joe Foss, Chuck Yeager and Robbie Risner. The book has a roll to it and otherwise is nm. The primary periodicals represented are AVIATION HISTORY, WORLD WAR II and AMERICAN FIGHTER ACES & FRIENDS. There are 31 issues of Aviation History, Nov. 2002-March 2008; 50 issues of World War II, Sept. 2002-March 2008, and 12 issues of American Fighter Aces, Fall 2004-Winter 2007. There are completes years of Aviation History for 2004, 2006 and 2007 and of World War II for 2005 and 2006. There also are four issues of Aloft, the Museum of Flight magazine, and one each of WWII History and America in WWII. These publications average nm.
